Our guy habitually misses by 15-20 degrees - other nite he said 5 below and it was -25. Everybody that made it to breakfast said everything they had that could possibly froze - DID! I swear i could guess closer if i got drunk and tried to lie on purpose! Why doesn't that guy run for Congress, take over for Mr Rogers or go somewhere they'd appreciate his stories?

As for us, i know i was gone for a month - Well that was interesting: a coupla weeks before we were scheduled to move last month, my hard drive developed a scratchy noise, right? So i fixed it with a whiz-bang new one. Which lasted a coupla weeks. So the guy was nice and gave me another upgrade at no cost. Well, meantime i'm trying to haul a load a day to the cabin and sort/compress (and still not totally wreck) everything we've collected for the last 9 years - and the well and van heater don't work and an underground pipe leaks and it's 20 below etc - so i FOUND the box with the master recovery disc, slapped the new(est) HD in this thing, and it gets stuck on the second line (can't find its master drive) so now my glasses broke and i can't find the boot disc box! So after awhile, back to the shop where they reset the bios, added a jumper for the cap limit (don't ask me) i brought the mess home, partitioned and formatted the HD and here i am again! for now. My old 3 gig went to 60 gigs, I still dont' know how to use the rest of the drive, but i'm stubborn so Lord willing --

Thanks for your concern friends, (the new people even got calls at the motel:) i was just (as usual) busy screwing up. We ARE moved but not unpacked, warm now, have our own running water again and have one of the few operational septic tanks in the county. Family's fine, cats are having a ball with the few mice we have left :) How's everybody been?

Hey DeadCarp!!!!!!!

It's great to see you again boy!
Your story makes me tremble with chilly fear, I might also be moving again. Back to be a city..ooppss, back to San Juan again.

And about screwing up? We've been here warming up for you comeback...:-)

DeadCarp - moving?    Posted 03-08-2003 at 06:33:29       [Reply]  [No Email]
Well San Juan can't be all bad either - heck look at all that live there already! Nice thing about moving is it gives you a fresh viewpoint. I used to think all Californians were nuts til i moved there and found out how many came from around here. I lived half my life either place - hard to tell if i'm nuts or not. Some things i see as sheltered backwoods and some are way too modern. but at least i don't paint them all with the same old-country German/Finn protestant brush anymore. :)

I for one, am glad to see you back...These people have been going absolutely off the deep end without you...

Thanks for sharing the story...But...What is a jumper for the cap?

Nearest i can tell, if you stick in a bigger hard drive, sometimes the bios limit doesn't allow for it so you have to add a jumper. Having not observed their jumper with my own eyes, i couldn't tell you whether they used 6 volts or 12.

PS: If this thing ran on plumbing, they'd call my puter-expertise a "flush-bar mentality" - "Well, when i push that shiny bar down, things are supposed to go away - now they don't!" (shrug - :)
