We bought a farm in NC with 2-2 acre ponds. One pond has no scum and the other is full of scum. Has anyone ever heard of a certian type of fish that eats pond scum. We were told that there is some kind of Japanese fish?????

I herd of fish that eat alga but they are illegal in Pa. Is there any way to increase the water flow to that pound. It may help.

I remember being told that a bale of (I think) alfalfa hay drug through the pond a few times and then left to soak in the water was good for eliminating some kinds of weeds/scum. Has anyone heard anything like this or know if it is really effective?

I'd heard it was a bale of barley straw.

Ducks and geese seem to help. It is my understanding pond scum is a result of overall pond health so to speak and there is really no magical one stop fixx all. If you have a soil and water conservation department or a coounty extension office that would be a good place to find info about ponds. There are several site on the internet. just do a search for pond building ans maintenance.

Probably thinking of koi, a carp type fish. Usually for pond vegetation you get grass carp. At least that's what they call them here. I think you get them through breeders or the state, they are sterile. And they get BIG!

You can try turning a buncha goldfish in there - they turn into carp when they eat natural. Really.

rhouston you was a gold fish before you died ???    Posted 03-21-2003 at 10:07:11       [Reply]  [No Email]
