I'm also looking at a tractor and over course we know nothing. It's an Allis-Chalmers 1972 it comes with a disk, grader and plow(I think) and the guy wants $4,800 for it. Starts right up. What else do I look for and what do you think about the rpice? No rust, if that matters. Thanks, Jan

Take a look at Yesterdays Tractors articles section. They have a great tutorial about "Buying your first tractor".

First fit the tractor to your needs . (work intended for tractor, pocketbook etc.) Once you've done that throughly go over all the components of the tractor. This should include ,tires, cooling system ,engine condition, steering ,clutch, and put the hydralic system through a good test (raise and lower the heaviest implement several times , should be smooth and chatter free...alot of expensive parts if you have to repair) I'd run it aleast 30min. while doing the inspection, things start to show the longer you run it (leaks etc.)Hard to tell about the price , you did'nt mention wether it was gas diesel or H/P all of which will determine price . Above all don't be afraid to "dicker" with him if it's what you want Hope this will help!!!!

Though I don't doubt you will get some good answers here, might I suggest you also ask this question on the Allis-Chalmers board for even more answers...
