Pasture seeding

I have some horse pastures that need some help. They have a lot of weeds and a little grass. Half of the pasture is clay and the other half is sandy.

I overseeded with a pasture mix last year in the spring and didn't see any improvement. A friend suggested spraying the fields with 24D to kill the weeds and then putting down some seed for grasses and alfalfa.

Questions: I live in Michigan, in sandy soils what kinds of grasses/alfalfa seeds have you had good luck with? in clay soils what kinds of grasses/alfalfa seeds have you had good luck with?

Thanks!

Did you take the horses off the pasture after you seeded it? Horses just will not let new grass come up, they'll graze it down before it can get a start.
