Moving a gas hot water heater. Got a question-

We have moved into a house that was built on a crawl space in 1950. Over the years there has been some very creative work done to the place.
The crawl space was dug out over time.
Now there is a partial basement. To gain more room in the basement someone decided that the gas hot water heater could be put into a hole in the crawl space. So, they busted up the concrete cap and dug a hole 3 1/2 feet into the dirt. Then they put 2 cinder blocks down and set the water heater in place. It is some piece of work.
I'm tearing it out and moving it this week. I'm puzzeled about draining it. I don't want to let it drain out into this narrow, deep hole it sits in. I'd like to keep that dry as possible and backfill it when the work is done.
The hole is deeper than the basement, so ciphoning doesn't seem to work- i.e. water won't run uphill- Can I hook a small electric pump to it with a garden hose and clear the tank that way?
Any of you folks got any experience with a set up like this? Sure could use some advice.

If you can get to the drain on the bottom you can probably pump it out if the pump will lift will much head. The drain may be clogged with sediment so you may have to pump backwards thru the valve to clear it and then pump it out.
If you have a source of air pressure you might blow down the hot water outlet and allow the water to flow back out the cold water inlet. The inlet is piped to close to the bottom of the tank. You could try hooking your pump onto the cold water side and try to pump the water out. Again, the pump must have suction equivalent to a column of water equal to the height of the tank in feet multiplied by 0.43. For a 5 ft tank that would be 2.15 psi.
