Outside, spread a clean tarpaulin or sheet and leave the beam on it for several days. Check every day to see if it is producing sawdust. If the borers are alive, they'll produce fresh dust fairly quickly.
I once bought an antique spinning wheel, one of those big walking wheels, which had been stored in a barn and which I found afterwards to be infested with some sort of borer. The bench of the wheel was oak, and they were happily tunneling through it. I have an old bathtub that I plugged and fill with clordane and water, weighed down the bench and sunk it in the tub for several days. Took it out, dried it, and was able to restore the bench with alot of wood filler to the tunnels.
This may be a drastic method, but it worked!
