I've always been told not to plant ornamental corn (Indian Corn) or popcorn closer than 300' to sweet corn or it will cross pollinate. Is this really a big problem? Will it effect the taste of the sweet corn?

Yes, it's a problem with all corn varieties. You can plant two that don't shed their pollen at the same time, tho. That will avoid the cross-pollination thang.
