I see them all the time, usually running across the road. I always thought that they were chipmunks until my dog caught one and brought it to us. Looks alot like a chipmunk but it's longer, mayber 6inches or so. Thanks, Jan

P.S. Maybe it is a chipmunk and they just grow 'em bigger in the country, lol,

I agree with Glen. Common striped gopher.

While you're looking look at mink. Don't know what area you are in, but here in the northeast they are making a real comeback.

On the "Images" tab of Google, do a search on "ground squirrel." Don't forget the quotation marks. I got almost 1600 hits - bet you'll find your critter on the first page of hits if he looks something like a chipmunk. We're plagued with pocket gophers, but started noticing some of the critters didn'thave mounds around their holes, and spent a lot more time above ground than we expected of the gophers. They also were bigger and had a bit different shape. Turned out to be ground squirrles. I've forgotten the variety, but there are several.

You might then try your state's extension service web page. Bet they have info also.

Probably a gopher. They are larger than a chipmunk and less colorfull. Do a search to look for pictures.
