Alternate uses for C-Band Satellite (big dish) System
[Return to Topics]

After much prodding I conceded to getting the Dish network. I now have a complete fully functional big dish system I can't seem to sell. Anyone interested? Located in N. FL

If not, does anyone know of some alternative uses for this equipment? Really don't relish the idea of just throwing it way.

I was thinking of trying to use it as an FM receiver for the home stereo.

Or set it up to receive local broadcast TV signals?

Thanks in advance.

Line it with something highly reflective like aluminum foil and make a solar cooker! Say goodby to cooking fuel costs.

Thanks Y'all !! (ShepFL)    Posted 08-06-2001 at 05:22:50       [Reply]  [No Email]
With all these great ideas (especially the artsy-craftsy ones) I have decided to assign this project to Mrs. ShepFL. The issue is now hers.

Using of a variety of the creative responses as incentive I am sure she will get the inspiration to do something to make even Martha Stewart envious!! Maybe a pic later??

Grins to All,
ShepFL

Good thought - we have one too. I was thinking maybe a cover for the cats' sunroom.
Course, they'd be ideal covers for a wire aviary,
or a real doozy of a trellis for strawberries or something.

not knowing if it is solid or mesh -

I have a few ideas -
Mesh,
*Large critter cage cover
*Giant sifter/seperator
*Hang it and stuff it with moss and plant with ivy for a unique UFO topiary
(could also make a ladybug or turtle on the ground covered with scarlet runner beans, snap peas..)
If it is a solid shell with a whole in the middle:
*A round pond and waterfall would be easy (we just finished the one here so I am biased)
*strawberries or other invasive plants could be contained within a raised round bed and still drian well.
*Upside down it could be a protective umbrella for kids playing in a sand box
*the bird bath idea was cute too - raised with a dry stack rock wall around would be a nice addition to any yard or garden.
*deep enough for a grill or BBQ pit?
*Nice outhouse roof
*good cover on a jungle gym for the firemans pole
*with a center support it be a cool swing
*provide a base and cushion and it is a teen lounger

so what did you all think of????

Dang Denise! You need a craft show on public TV! Them were some mighty fine ideas! You'd make Martha Stuart look bad, heehee...........

I had a friend give me his when he moved. I found out how much it cost to get the cement pad poured, wires to the house and then fees to get it set up. I just left in my old truck when I sold it. Duey

Hurricane Irene took care of my big dish in Oct 99.
But I still have the indoor stuff here somewhere!

I'm still using mine for TV. Hard to give up a $2300 investment as long as it works. Programming is getting hard to come by. And it's a pain having to wait for the dish to move when needed.

I've seen some old ones in yards painted like a sunflower.

Nathan, sunflower idea has already been done.Gotta be PC,so I can't say zactly which one,but I understand a state bordering Va. has already made them the offical state flower.

ROFLMAO. That's about right Alvin.

I was in one of them border neighbor states of yours a few years back. Some of them folks think Andrew Jackson is still the Prez.
