How do I preserve stairs made of pine?

I built stairs made of un-treated pine. What's the best way to preserve/protect them? I got mixed answers at the store. Some said to let it weather for a year - but didn't seem to know why? Some products caution that they may make the wood slippery, definitely can't have that (new steps are for my Mother who just had knee replaced - switched it from 4 regular steps to 6 4.5" steps).
Any info appreciated!! Thx!

Envirotex. Its a urethane like coating. Put about 1/8" of that on, let it dry real good and hard. Then put a thin layer and throw a handfull of sand on it. You'll have good traction and good durability. Every year or two you might have to glue down some more sand but the wood will last.
