We have a neutered female cat that has a strange habit. It will jump up on ones lap and push back & forth with its front paws in a trance type state. What is this wierd act?

Jimbob, your cat is "kneading" with her paws, which is common in most cats. Some will only do it when they are about to bed down; others prefer a cushy lap. As Kelly said, it is sort of an instinctive reaction to their kitten-hood habit of kneading their mother for milk. I guess it has some sort of comforting memory for them, if cats can be said to have any memory at all!

And Kelly, don't say "ew" if a cat sucks on buttons. That generally means they were weaned too early, but it is also a sign that they are very comfortable with you, or else they wouldn't do it -- they basically are reverting to childhood and seeing you as "mama." It is a sign of trust.

Kat in NJ, who is not called "kat" for nothing, being the local rescue person.....

We have 4 cats (well, 5 counting the tomcat tht's visiting right now - he must be visiting, ours are all fixed) anyway, our oldest Cali adopted the missus so likes to help Suzn do her hair. Almost every day she'll start kneading, then stretching her claws, then she gets busy on the hair - chewing, pulling, smoothing it out - acts like she wants to eat it. Then she wants a lapnap. Cutest darn thing :)

I have been through so many cats, and I am down to two 13 year olds, and that will be it for me, anyway, they do that from a throwback habit from when they were kittens. I had one that would not only do that but suck and drool on my shirt! EEEWWW! As kittens they do that to the mothers breast to stimulate milk production and they get milk out of it. So I figure when they do that to you they are just being loving, I reckon. Mine always purred while she did it, so I guess it made her happy! :)
