I am having problems with my lawn tractor, 14HP Briggs engine. After "working" on the carb it will not run at low rpms!! Some times you even have to have it choked to keep it running. Any clues to what I could have done to it?? Thanks in advance.

Air Leak...    Posted 06-22-2003 at 06:43:17       [Reply]  [No Email]
When you need to keep the choke part way on to run, it is usually an air leak...

What 'work' did you do to it???

I am betting you messed up a gasket somewhere...Easy test...Start it and get it to 'lope' (where you say it will not idle)...Then spray some WD-40 around the carb and gaskets...If it smoothes out without the choke, then you have found your air leak...

Your "float" in the carb needs adjustment. If that is off it throws all other adjustments out of whack.

There wa a screw to adjust idel mixture,Often the cause of bad idle..Look for online help on you model of engine. If you folks get a rideing one that pops a lot..Look at ground (SAFETY) switch on seat. The problem most often. Raise the seat.Unplug ground wire ,Then if it quits popping and dying you have isolated the problem.Dont do like most and overhaul the carb..(Me for instance)
