You see the vee ditch problem below? My father was raised on a farm.He had to quit school in the third grade as did his brothers because their father was injured in a railroad accident. So they had to teach themselves what the didnt learn in a school house. The problem was ,For them there was no library anywhere near ,nor books as we have these days in the plenty. They decided to learn things because your food on the table is a result of your work,if you learn a skill you can make more than an ordinary ditch digger. So my fater learned things in simple ways but got accurate answers. He taught me the Vee ditch calculation this way.Draw an end view of the ditch. It looks like a V. Make a vertical line through the V,Then one on one side of the V.You have flipped the half of the V over.erase the unused half. You now see the end of a box.4ft deepx 2 ft wide<> 4 deep X 2 Wide X 150 ft long =1200 Cubic ft Divide by 27 you have 44.4444 cubic yards.

I'm not sure I was able to visualize what a vee ditch is, but the way you explained it..I think you are still only removing 1/2 of the 4x4 ditch area at 150 foot long and I just figured the entire yards removed if it were a square and then figured you were only removing 1/2 of that area in dirt and that's how I came up with 44.4....also known on most test as circling answer "C"...hee-hee!

Anne.. The 4ft wide(AT TOP ONLY) Vee ditch is zero wide at bottom.Draw a picture.Vee ,4 ft wide at top 0 at bottom ,4 ft deep,,Flip the right / <<< upside down,Make a box end.Same volume because half the Vee is 2ft wide.= 4 deep 2 wide by length.
