I just put a new belt on it. Deck belt. The last one was screaming like a cat on fire. Now the new one is smoking! I put it on and fired it up and all the sudden I got this black smoke. All the pulleys are moving okay except the front one feels a little stiff. Also the belt has a little bit of play in it. Maybe a quarter inch. Any suggestions? It's a 46" husky.

Take the belt back off. Check each pulley by turning by hand. Check under deck and see if something is wrapped around the blades. Sounds like a pulley problem to me. Can you grease them? Take one blade in your hand at a time and try to move it up and down, should be no wiggle. If there is play bearings are shot in the spindle and need replaced. I don't think 1/4 inch play in the belt would hurt.

Also when you reinstall the belt make sure the belt is running on the right side of all belt guides. Don't ask.

TB, don't have to ask! One time couldn't get a mower to cut well with new blades. Made the blades turn the right way and it worked better. That belt thing gets confusing at times.

I'll let you know. I got rained out so I haven't been back to it yet. It's funny, but I remember the last time I changed the belt I had absolutley no probelm following the guide diagram on the deck. For some reason this time I had to look at it a half dozen times and even pratically stand on my head to look at it from the 'right' perspective. There may be something to the belt guide thing TB.
