New tractors / old tractors

My family just returned from a trip to visit kin in Ohio. Saw a number of smaller new tractors on new trailers with new bushogs, etc. I see that there are several outfits here (Va.) that are selling these package deals too.

We won't be buying anything new, but I can see some merit in the idea for those folks that can.
Especially for folks working 25 acres or less and hobby farming.

BUT- what are they going to do for parts in 10-20 years when their new iron gets to be older iron?

Our equipment is older. Some might say antique. Parts are still available for most of the older tractors.
This next generation of machinery seems questionable. I guess it is a chance you take for those low interest package deals from overseas.

I guess I agree with everybody here. I don't like any of the new junk that is available now either. I sometimes have a bit of trouble getting parts here in Canada, but I'm close to the border and I have no trouble in the States. Last time I went down they had everything in stock.
I'ts sad, but most everything that is built now is of inferior quality or improperly designed. Even the cars and trucks nowadays are sadly lacking in basic needs, like headroom.

Magpie,,You are on to something there.They threw simplicity out the window in the desire to promote fashion.Why do we need raceing stripes on tractors?

Good question Mike.

To the dealer's dismay, I bought an old 8N off the back of his lot instead of some $12K Korean thing he was trying to sell me. Took me about 6 months to get it running well--had to rebuild some stuff and learned a lot along the way. But now, 5 years later, the old girl is still running with very little maintenance or repair. I paid a little bit of cash, and some of my time and sweat but I *know* it is more reliable than that danged new one is.

Only junk implements I've bought (so far) have been the couple of new ones I talked myself into. All my old Dearborn and Ferguson and NH implements are built like tanks and take my abuse (unintentional, thru my ignorance) and misuse and keep on going.

Give me the old iron any day,

Bonnie 8N and I can run rings around the Kooboater up the hill...Supposedly more horsepower and all that...Guy latched onto a downed tree a few months back...Thought that poor sucker was gonna rip himself (or the tractor) the way he was jerking and ranking on that tree...I pulled up with the 8N and just hooked his chain on...First gear maybe half throttle, slip the clutch and you could just feel her hunker down and bite that sod and away we went...

God Bless Henry Ford and Harry Ferguson...

I hope you were pulling that tree in reverse. There are several posts in the YT archives of men pulling trees & stumps and getting killed doing it. Those hearty machines can come right up overhead on you before you can think to get off.
As for Henry Ford, well he stole Fergusons patent right to the 3 point hitch. Seems that Henry didn't give a hoot about the property of others. Ford settled for a measly 3 million or so, that is after he made a fortune off of Fergusons brainchild. Ferguson is the brain behind those little tractors, not Ford.

Makes sense to keep these old machines running.
The time and effort still is well below the cost of a new one. Sure is a good feeling when these old tractors crank up after a shade tree repair. I hope to put together a McCormick-Deering sickle bar mower sometime. It is missing a few pieces, but that is just a part of the puzzle to solve. The owners manual shows that it will fit nearly any of the good oldies. It bolts on rather than a 3 point hook-up. It has a trailing wheel and uses flywheel that weighs as much as our 6' bushog!
If you find good old implements and can put them to use you are doing yourself a favor in the long run I think. Our stuff isn't much to look at, but then neither are we. lol

I think a lot of what you are seeing is the toys that people just got to have. A lot of people have a small use for these machines and that use frees up their time to use their other toys. I think that these like our other toys are considered disposable and as long as serve the purpose that they were purchased for then it really doesn't matter what happens to them. Sorta like keeping a new $30,000.00 car for 15 years and then you got to pay someone to haul it off. My wife recently took her 14 year old car in for some work and the service manager said point blank. Most people don't get cars that old fixed. Anyway I guess this is what keeps the economy moving so I am looking forward to seeing them in everyone elses yard.

I hope not, I'd like to see everyone that is happy with what they are using keep it running. There are too many throw aways. The thing about using and maintaining older equipment- it's paid for, and it does what it did and has done -and- as long as that can keep up then you are ahead of the debt game.

No real gain in new unless you hit that lottery big, and we don't play that for fear of ruining ourselves! lol..

I got 51 acres. Now understand that I don't depend on farm income. I make a nice amount from what I have. My only tractor is a 1947 ford 8n. Parts are available overnight from a dozen different places. From what I understand, almost all the red, green and orange small tractors, (compacts), have the same diesel engines from the same far eastern factory. Can't say for sure.
My old ford may not have much power, and it may take longer to do some tasks, but I don't have a $400 per month for 8 years tractor payment.

know what you mean. That kind of payment can mean a whole lot against the mortgage. I'd be worried about all the scratches I could put on a new tractor LOL- Mike D.

Both my tractors are old (1951 and 1967), and most of my larger equipment is old. As you said, you can still get parts for them, and they are so much cheaper, I would never buy new. As our farming operation expands, my wife and I will be buying more tractors and equipment. We will never buy new tractors or new large equipment. They just cost too much, and I don't believe that they will be any more reliable than the old stuff.

The economy of well maintained older equipment is incredable to me. Best value is older ag equipment in 'takin care of' condition. Even when put alongside these new machines. We got a rusty, wore Oliver 1850 that will out perform any 'package' tractor 4 to 1, lol.
Well, it isn't much to look at, but what a personality.

I agree. I've got a 1967 Oliver 1550, with a loader. It's a great tractor!!

I also have a 1951 Ferguson TO-20, also great. These tractors can outperform most modern day tractors easily!!!

We were talking about those little Ferguson tractors the other day. I'd like to have one, I love my farmall but 3 point hitch would sure be handy.
Unfortunately my farm is not in dairy country and tractors smaller than a Farmall H or John Deere A are fairly uncommon. I've seen some fair deals on Farmall As but with not hydralics or 3pt hitch its just not what I need.

Hi Ludwig,
We had a David Brown 990. Ran like a top. Strong lift and had remotes hydraulics.
It could work circles around those TO's and burn less fuel. Something you may want to think over.
Parts aren't too bad when you need them. We let ours go because we needed a bigger tractor. Paid less for it than we did for our lawn mower.

I see the same thing here.
These newer imports are appealing with the financing and options the machine has for the money.
I too use old equipment. Parts are still available from the manufacturer and they donít seem to cost much to keep running. Its amazing how easy parts are to get even for a 30 to 40 year old machine.

I think the imports are going to be hard to get parts for as they age and begin to wear. There are a few models out now that are only a few years old and I have already heard that parts are a problem. If the part support is not available for the import machines there may be many of them seeing early retirement. I donít know what to think of it other than I will probably keep on running the old stuff.

Well, for us it is 'run the old stuff'. I can usually figure my way through a problem with our equipment.I think that is because these old tractors were built so a farmer could work on them himself. We have a tractor that was built in 1956. I just rebuilt the carburetor on it. Most of the screws looked like someone had at it with a Case Sodbuster. Probably so, but that wasn't the reason the carb quite. Old age killed the bushings in the throttle shaft. What is going to kill the injector pumps on these new offshore diesels? AND can you fix one with a Case Sodbuster?

There are somethings that could be improved on the old tractors.I wonder why some of the big industrialist up north do not make kits for them?The small V8 Chevy engine can be bought custom made.
