Yesterday I looked at a little baackhoe job where I had looked at grubbing a 10 foot wide stripp of privett hedge 75 feet long. I told the lady that I'd deliver the backhoe and grub the hedges and stack to burn and dispose of the ashes by burial or stack the piles near the woods and psh them in for habitat . I told her it'd be in the 150 to 200 dollar price range depending on disposal. she flipped out and told me her brother in law had a little JD with a backhoe and loader. I told her thatd be good to but i didnt give the same price for fixing anothers screw up. She had seen a few yard i had done the same with and liked the look. Well today i got a call to come look at it again and figure the new price. I figured it in the 225 to 300 range after the mess I looked at. He did nt under stand what grubbing was and had a hole dug and had the dirt stacked in the little piles he had started. He had big dips where he had tried to root them out with the loader. He made a few dents in the hedge but more mess. The customer told me she should have listened too my reasoning the first time.
I used to have a boss that would spend 10 dollars trying to save 50 cents once that was always fun. We rebuilt pumps for Caterpillar and made a custom pump line. He decided hed get rid of his flower bed weeding plan and save 75 dollars a month so every morning me and another guy that were to build pumps had to pick out the flower beds. Niether of us knew the difference between a flower or a weed. I got chewed for leaving the pretty purple flowers and gettin the uggly white ones. Later found out the white ones were the real flowers. Every morning the 2 of us making 12 and hour each on company time had to spend 3 hours every morning weeding plants. Did this all summer every day getting further behind on the pumps. I cant see how some folks cant see how to spend money wisely.

The old lady remembers bread for 5 cents & 15 cents a gallon gasoline.

Been there.

Got a little JD compact with a backhoe on it. Had a feller call me up about digging up a spot for a flower bed.

He didn't ask about money until I'd loaded up and hauled over there. When he asked, I told him I had a one-hour minimum to cover my loading and hauling time, and it'd be $35 (this was a few years back) and he pitched a fit because it was only gonna take me 15 or 20 minutes.

I mentioned that a decent shovel cost about the same, loaded back up, and drove away.

I can't bring myself to pull into somebodies yard with $35,000 worth of equipment (including truck and trailer) and sit very long listening to them complain about spending $35.

I told the lady that the fella could do it wit hthe little Compact but hed only been on the thing 2 weeks Ive been clearing for 9 years lol. I get aggravated alot of times at poor mouthing. Had a wealthy widow woman call once, She owned half the town and asked for a septic tanks i dug the hole but halfway through the hole she came out and showed me her new Mercedes. When she asked about the price for the whole installation she when psycho. She told me that JA tuker had put one in 41 years ago for 150 dollars. I told dad what shed said and dad told me he was the one that put that tank in. It had rused and caved off. She told me shed just get another so i got her to pay me and let the next fella dig it. My septic system cost is about 750 dollars for every thing and me buy material. I think the other guy got here for 1250 and left a mess. I just sold a 7 foot flail mower hat was a bit big for my tractor. This fella came around and was poor mouthing about the price 400 dollars while he was there my neighbor came by and looked at the mower while the other fella was looking for any thing to lower the price and whipped out 400 bucks and said ill take it. I negotiate pretty good on prices but sometimes folks like to overnegotiate

Reminds me of the city cousin who was carrying on about how his $60,000 new car only has a hundred miles on it, until his country cousin offered to take him out in the shed and show him the $250,000 combine he only drives 2 weeks a year :)
