I plucked a leaf from one of the trees I have
been admiring. It is a Thick leaf, dark green, glossy with white underneath, white stem, lobed, palmate, looks more like a maple shape. It has that sweet smell that a cottonwood or maple leaves have. (Even the outside of the leaf may appear to have a small outline of white--unless
that's an optical illusion given by nature with
so much white underneath.)

Still not enough info. There must be tree ID sites you can go to on the internet. Where are you located?
Is this thing a tree or a shrub? It's not a white oak is it?
Cottonwood smells sweet???

Check out this link. I got to snooping around and came across this and thought maybe this is what you're looking at.

Especially if the new leaves look like a mitten.

WallSal - IL ...Nope!    Posted 07-11-2003 at 14:14:07       [Reply]  [No Email]
Not a Sassafrass! If you have never smelled
the smell of cottonwood leaves/trees--you haven't lived!
(but not the leaves when they're wet and on the ground).

WallSal55 Got it!    Posted 07-11-2003 at 14:53:56       [Reply]  [No Email]
Found it on Iowa Tree ID site. Populous Alba.
