I have a newly aquired horse. She has been in my barn in a stall for about a week, she is coming along nicely, I have started putting here in the riding pen, the last 3-4 days and back in the barn at night, I have put some fly repellant on her coat and yesterday noticed that there are welts on her coat, along the side of her body and some underneath, I am not noticing this on my other horses or cattle, question is has any one ever seen anything like this , they look like a lot of mosquito bites, that are bumping up, I stopped using the fly repellant, thinking maybe she is allergic, thanks fior the help.I know there are many here that have horses, hope you can help, pat

Yes, my mustang mare does the same thing and it seems to be mostly when the horseflies are biting. Some of the fly repellants are too week or they dont repel all of the flies. At times dancer looks like she has hives but the effects dont last long

Maybe a more natural fly repellant would be better? Here is a link to a post on Page 2 of this forum, where CowgirlJ gave her recipe for fly repellant.
