My first stitches.......

new little piggy born this morning got stepped on by mom and it cut him from shoulder to elbow, this huge flap of (shudder) skin hanging on. Had to be debrised first and while I was cleaning it he was screaming to beat the band so I gave him a shot of banamine and he got quiet almost in minutes. I never knew how hard it was to push a needle through skin until today. Ten stitches. I need to get some surgical needles, all I had was one from my sewing box. I don't want to do that again, thank you.

Good job, Cindi, and fast thinking!!!

Sewing thread works fine, but as you said surgical needles make the job easier.

Cindi, coulda used you Sunday night. Seems the lawnmower threw a rock out the back and cut through my denims and slashed clear across my shin. (As if Saturday weren't enough) Wrapped it with icthamol and vet wrap. Still hurt yesterday so I went to the doctor, who just shook his head. When he suggested I keep it iced, I asked if cans of beer would do as the contents do help against the pain.
When I got back to the office, I found a message from the Mrs. She wanted to take the kids to the library and started up the truck. Seems one of the barn cats had been sleeping on the engine and yee-oooowed about like I did saturday night with the 'lectric fence. Poor kitten had to be put down. The step son, 15 yr old, stood there blubbering and wouldn't shoot it with his brand new birthday rifle. I tried to explain over the phone that with all the suffereing the cat was going through, the kind thing would be to put it out of misery. He couldn't do it, so I called a neighbor kid and he came over and did mercy. Heck of a full moon I got this month.

I carry a curved surgical needle and nylon stitch with me in the woods...

I tell myself that I have it in case I need to sew up the belly of a deer (if I ever got one that is) after field dressing...

Has come in handy more than once...

This is only the second injury we've had that called for stitches, the last one was in a six month old glit, and there was no stitching her, so we just let it heal as is and kept it flushed with betadine solution. Ugly scar but no infection.

But this would have died. Fred said a lot of the reason it was so tough to stitch is because it is pig skin. Tough as heck. If it had been a dog or a cat probably would have been a lot less difficult, but it looks real good, I just pretended it was a pair of jeans. Gave him a good healthy dose of pncln and now he's sleeping it off. I'll put him back with mom early tomorrow a.m.

SH I know why your son couldn't do it. If it had been someones elses cat he could have. No connection.

I've heard lately that Super Glue is being used sometimes instead of stitching. Wonder if that would be a good alternative to use on pigs? Do pigs shed skin cells like humans? If so, it would wear off in time and would give the wound time to heal.

Oops! I just thought of all kinds of new adventures you could get into using this, Cindi! LOL!

You know, that's something to definitely look into to. It sure would have made the job easier. I'll check with the vets.

Joe K said he had a mental picture of me with a pigmunk superglued to each hand. Funny but when he said it, I could see it too. Hah!
