The symbols always match a number divisable by 9. The symbols rotate after you click the crystal ball. Any two numbers you choose will be a factor of 9 so you will have your symbol every time.

Try it with a whole bunch of different numbers. You'll notice that the answer is always the same symbol.
Then when you try it again (new screen), it will be a different symbol. For instance, the first one I tried gave the little flower as the symbol for every answer, no matter where I started from. The next time, the answer was the star and crescent.

It is a mathematic trick set-up. Only someone who really understands math can explain it, but I know it's a trick. Something to do with which symbols are put with which numbers that will come out the same mathematically. Don't ask me to get any more technical than that. I have trouble balancing a checkbook. ;)
