Should have I bit my tongue

Farmer Gene (WI)    Posted 08-16-2003 at 14:17:18       [Reply]  [No Email]

We've been having a dry spell here and the crops need rain badly. I was in line at the grocery store and the woman behind me said how nice the weather was, I said yes but we sure could use some rain, the farmers crops are all drying up. She reply'd that she didn't care about the farmers or their crops and she didn't want rain because she was painting her garage. I then told her that I hoped that it would start to rain when she was about half done with the painting and told her that the crops that the farmers grow are what ends up on her table for her meals and it looks like you haven't missed very many. (she was on the heavy side, looked like she could use a month on the farm picking rock and throwing hay bales around) My wish didn't come true, still no rain.

Well, I like your cow anyway. :) Hope you get some rain. By the way, I am a bit on the heavy side, but I do a lot of physical work, which she probably doesn't, but anyway, I do all the work inside and out of this house, that includes, mowing, trimming, weedwhacking, washing three vehicles and waxing, planting, painting, yard saling, just about anything else you can think of outside. Inside I keep the house, I keep a husband, 8 year old, 7 finches, 2 fish, 2 cats, an iguana, and a border collie, which keeps me busy. I also build agility equipment, work the dog on it, , shall I go on? I am not offended by what you say, I know you were mad. Just wanted to let you know all us heavy gals aren't sittin on our butts all day! :) All in good humor! I don't know why I don't weigh 90 pounds, but I don't let it stop me. Oh, and by the way, I will also be at the Ga Natl Fair doing my show with Dewey and his stock dogs, so that has to keep us going to.

you don't have anything to apologize for, I think her remark was in bad taste. H**l with her

To get confrontational over what one hopes the weather will be like is utterly absurd!! Neither of you can make the weather do what you want by "hoping". So yes in my opinion to get upset and remark back was not called for. I've seen this same argument before and it never ceases to amaze me. The weather will be what it will be, with no acknowledgment to farmer or city dweller, rich man or poor. You may as well go give the weather man "what for" for not forcasting the kind of weather you want.

Unfortunately, comments like yours put ALL farmers in a bad light. Sometimes we wonder why our choice of professions is looked down upon and it's due to the rudeness and superior attitude of some.
Maybe a better thing would have been to try & inform her of why rain is important to her future food supply-lack of it will raise the costs, less availability, poorer quality, etc.
Have you ever complained about rain when it came at the wrong time, like when you have hay down and ready to be baled? Now if someone said to you "Gee I love rainy weather & am glad it's pouring outside" when you saw that same rain costing you quality hay do you think you would have been supportive of their views & opinion?

Just my take on things and I would really try to see how the other person can learn more about our profession without insulting them. You can catch more flies with honey than with vinegar sure fits this situation.

Sorry I shot from the hip Katy-I shouldn't have done a personal attack, it's just a subject that makes my blood boil--the attitude of town people toward farmers. I have tried to explain things to some of them and never saw where it did any good. Everybody is entitled to their opinion. Have a good day.

Too bad everybody didn't bite their collective tongues instead of responding to the post below. All you do is encourage that kind of people whether you respond seriously or in jest.

Ironic that she was standing in the grocery store at the time. I find it harder and harder to bite my tongue the older I get. It hurts too much.
