That pup. We bought him a chew toy a month ago. A hotdog or some silly thing. Held it out to him and squeaked it and he took off across the yard like a shot. Didn't stop to look back until he hit the fence and ran out of yard. Then he just looked over his shoulder with one big round eye. Tossed it to him and he whined and ducked. Tossed it for him to retrieve and he ran the other way.
Yesterday at feeding time I walked past the yard and I heard a faint squeaking noise. My ears perked up, sounded like a young chicken. I fastened my eyes on him where he was laying half hidden in some high grass.
"You got a chicken in there, boy?!?"
"No." He said, and blinked twice. I believed him. He looked innocent enough, no feathers about.
I can hear him now, squeaking that thing for all he's worth out there on the back porch. Thump thump squeak. Thump squeak. Squeak squeak squeak thump. Once he gets tired of squeaking and thumping, he drops it on the porch and barks at it.
It just took him awhile to catch on. Turned out to be a worthy investment after all.
