Duck Hunting...

The picture posted by Dave Smith of sunset of Lake Erie was very timely for me...

Yesterday I hauled out all my old 'deeks' and started touching up paint, checking cords and making sure they had weights...

They have been bagged up since the mid 80's...I quit hunting ducks back then because the duck populations were drastically down, and the goose populations skyrocketed...In the last 5 years, population levels have come back almost to their historic 1960's levels in all flyways...I spent a few days this summer tooling around Lake Champlain in my 12 foot boat scouting for good spots to set up...

Some of my earliest memories are of duck hunts with my Father and Uncles...Used to be a major part of our lives...I feel it is time to make some new memories...I also plan to document our adventures this fall, and will post our progress...

As DeadCarp put so eloquently..."Mack"...

Dove season opened here Sept 1, and Teal opened last weekend. We have had record birds for the last seven years. The limits have gone up. I have not hunted since the open heart back in 98 but used to take my son and he loves it. He is after me to go back this year. The last two years I have heard we have so many geese that when regular season closes end of January they have not only extended it way into Feb but you can take the plugs out use electronic callers and no limits on Snows.

They are giving us 15 Snowies/day here with no posession limit...Fill your freezer with breasts...Mmmmmm...

The last several years we've had many ducks in this area where we didnt used to see them. Ive never tried duck hunting but i was considering giving it a shot this year.

If you are any kind of WingShooter, it is a blast (no pun)...Not only that, they taste good...

Something to this day about the sound of wings that can boil my blood like nothing else...Some folks get all excited about deer hunting...I have always thought of deer as boring and tedious...I used to hunt deer in the AM, and then drive 75 miles to hunt geese in the afternoon...The older I get...The less ambition I have to hunt deer at all...

If you are going to try your hand at ducks, might I suggest that you find someone that has been hunting for a while and have them show you the ropes...Back when I was hunting hard, I loved newbies in the swamps...Their deek setups look like a checkerboard, and their calling was so bad it kept the birds flying till they got to me... ;-)

I agree with you on deer hunting, I usually do a little every year but if its cold out I dont go, and it is boring as heck. I can always get roadkill venison and save freezing my butt off. I love watching ducks, Woodies are my favorites but not as plentiful anymore, but we have a ton of mallards, and plenty of canadian geese

years ago my buddy waltrip went duck hunting with his uncle in missouri i think - they had decoys out and were tooting their calls and were shivering in this little boat when suddenly his uncle said sit still - a mocassin slid in with them right past waltrip - as it came toward him, the uncle stood up with his shotgun and blasted the snake twice - the snake calmly crawled on out and left them in this sinking boat with tall grass folding over them and the beer and boxes of shells bobbing around - wally was trying to call his uncle a dumb sob & laughing so hard he couldn't help much. plus they got skunked. :)
