This man is probably the foremost authority in the world on trees. I have had the good fortune to be exposed to him on occasion. My wife used to babysit for his kids 35+ years ago.
He is a prolific author and passionate about his subject.
I invite you to check out this link and any other information that you can find out about him (there's lots of it).

In 1994 I took an eight month course in Landscaping Design in the university of PR [UPR].
The class was invited to a trade show where the main theme would be Bonsai.
The teacher invited a Bonsai grower, Pedro, to tell the class about what we would be learning, and all the right people we would be meeting there at the convention.
His enthusiasm was contagious, and said we shouldn't miss the opportunity to talk to Shigo after his presentation in the show.
To be quite honest, I don't remember exactly what Shigo said, word by word.
It was in english and
in those days mine wasn't good enough to follow the sense, without 'subtitles'..hehe

Maybe it was 'your' Alex Shigo, but I only remember him by Shigo.

Couldn't sleep.

I sent Pedro a mail asking him about that 1994 tradeshow and Shigo.
