What does skunk smell like?

Okay, I don't think I've ever smelled skunk, even when I was little and we were driving in the car and everyone said "eeewh!!, skunk must of got hit"...I could never smell anything. Now, this morning my dog came yelping up from the pasture, (like she does when her tail hits the electric fence). She kinda smelled but, not knowing what skunk smells like, I'm not sure. If you know what a dog smells like that has had an anal sack infection (it's a very distinctive smell), that's kinda what she smells a little like crossed with maybe dead animal. Is it possible skunk? (it's not a real heavy-knock you over smell) Or my next guess is she did hit her tail on that electric fence and that caused her little behind to actually eject some from that anal sack. What do you think? Seems there's been a lot of skunk post lately.

OMG, my dog just got sprayed(so i think) and it is just lingering in our house, at first it smelled like a horrible skunk smell that wants to make u puke, but like 5 min later is smells like burnt rubber, this could be a horrible night sleep tonight with that skunk smell, and its not one of those smells u can get used to, it stays bad forever

If you really wanna know what skunk smells like, piss one off, and you will find out really soon.

The smell is sort of like a really bad gas smell, but 1000 times stronger, and then sort of a dead animal smell (but stronger) and then the rest of the perfume is kind of a brand of its own. Usually when you walk through parks/fields on warm nights in spring, when you smell something horrible and you feel like your gonna pass out from the horrible gas, thats skunk.

OMG. Horrible is the only thing that comes to mind when describing the smell on my dog after he was sprayed. I let him into the house, suddenly smelled something like a vaccuum cleaner's belt burning, bent down to sniff the dog's fur, and recoiled with a shout of "What the F***?"

It did not smell like lemon, or skunk weed, or anything else that I would have normally associated with skunk smell. It is so bad. We thought maybe there was an electrical fire in the house somewhere. It was awful.

I scrubbed him down with a mixture of hydrogen peroxide 3%, baking soda, and some dish washing liquid. Then I hosed him off and washed him down with dog shampoo and rinsed him off again. I can still smell it on him, but at least it's not as bad as it was. Still, I think he'll be sleeping outside tonight. Poor dog.

Dear,I think your nose doesn't work.If someone can analize an anal sack infection or a skunk, there is some wire not connected from your nose to your indicater!LOL

i think it smells like a hyninikan (the one in the green bottle) beer when its first opened up only the skunk is stronger. never developed a taste for either.

Like rhouston said, it's kinda hard to describe, but if you get a good shot of it, it's so strong that your eyes will water, your nose and sinuses will burn and run like a faucet. It'll be hard to even get a breath through your mouth. It stays with you too, hard to get rid of it.
If your dog got a direct hit, he'll be one unhappy pup for awhile.

Very strong skunk to me smells like rubber tire tubes (although alot stronger than any rubber you'll find). you can taste it, nor does it leave your nose when you get out of it. light to medium skunk is a sour sewer type smell. hard to describe.

I always think of rubber products when I smell skunk, but like you say 1000 times stronger.

I can deal with a burning fan belt and not run from it. I will even drive over one on the road! Mark H.

Well it comes across the smell of bunt rubber like someone said and burned fried rice. A skunk just sprayed moments ago outside and it smells. Welp i'm out.

Mark, a burning fan belt is only like a small burning rubber tire tire. We use tires all the time for fire starters. We sure wouldn't use a skunk, not even a rubber tired one.

I must be strange, because I've always kinda liked the smell of skunk. Step out on a February morning with that tinge of skunk in the air and you know false spring is here.

Of course there's the time my dog got in a fight with a skunk and came up and rubbed all over me just before the school bus came. Pretty much had things to myself that day.

If you really want to know what a skunk smell like, just go out on a warm damp night to a field with short grass growing in it using a flashlight. When you spot a critter that is black with white stripes down the top of it back, its him. He's alooken for grubs. Run up to it and pick it up by the tail. Then you'll know, its an experience you'll never forget.

My coondogs can't resist them. I remember one night they tangled with one and I thought I didn't get any of that perfume on me only to find out later when I stopped at a supermarket on the way home to have everyone I passed say to me, "I smell skunk". I just smiled and said, "Ya, Me Too" and went merrily on my way. As I was leaving I noticed the manager peeken down the isles.
