Howdy all,

I have something for ya. Not sure if you all will be able to help out, but maybe. Here this last 2 weeks, it seems I am getting more and more kittens and cats at the barn. Don't know where they are coming from...They just "show up".

Our property is surrounded by brushline, Woods, and fields of corn and/or soybeans. Now we have an outhouse for a bathroom, but mostly it isn't used, against the side of the barn...right next to the fence.

This last weekend, my 11 yr old son was playing while I was feeding the animals and he came running in, wild look in his eyes...almost petrified...if a boy can look petrified. Said he just seen the biggest cat he has ever seen as he was coming out of the outhouse. He scared it when he opened the door and it jumped through the weeds.

When we went home, he told my hubby about it and basically, he said it was Bull...that we were pulling his leg. I thought maybe he was stretching a tale a bit...

Sunday evening, my hubby was walking the fence line to see if he could find a break in the electric wire (having current problems)...he too came walking up to me...shaking...said he seen the largest cat he has ever seen. He walked by it and it spooked. (It was on the other side of the fence) He said it was all black and "pounced" and "jumped" through the weeds, which is why he thinks it was a cat. Only thing is, he estimates this thing to be about 3 to 4 FOOT LONG. He said it happened so quick, he wasn't able to see anything other than estimate length and that it was black.

Ok, so now I am scared. I have two small children. There are about 7 kittens/cats on top of my two cats that I originally started with. Anything sound familiar to anyone? btw, live in Kentucky if that helps.

thanks,
MichelleH

My local fire chief just saw one of these cats last night. He said it was jet black, about 75 lbs. and around the size of my large lab. I live in eastern North Carolina about an hour east of Raleigh. He said it raised the hair on his arm when the cat growled at him. He said he knows what he saw and it was definitely no dog or cat.

Well, just wanted to let you know that we think we may have identified what this "cat" is. Upon reviewing different pictures on the internet, my husband says the Wolverine looks EXACTLY like what he seen....coloring and pattern. I thought it could possibly be a badger, but all the pictures we have seen so far definitely doesnt look anything like a wolverine.

Didn't think wolverines were here in Kentucky, but I guess anything is possible. Now, for what I should do...Any suggestions?

Thanks,
MichelleH

Maybe this cat escaped or was turned loose by someone who wanted an exotic pet. So often people buy these cats and as they get bigger, they can't handle them properly. Soooooo, they turn them loose figuring that they will take care of themselves. Just love these kind of people!! Anyway, if so, that would explain why the animal is hanging around your place. It might not be afraid of people. Either way, you need to get the Game commission out your way and have them check this out. You and your children could be in danger.

The Pa Game Commission keeps saying there are no cougars in PA, despite nearly a hundred sitings per year. When someone gets a picture, the Pa GC says it must be an escaped pet. Yeah right! I suppose it may have been a young one. Another animal, which we seldom see or even hear about it the Fisher or Pine Martin. Kind of a very big weasel type animal, bout the size of an otter. My wife told me she saw a critter that looked like a dark, three foot long ferret. She said definitely bigger than a our cat and longer than our dog. Only thing I could thing of was perhaps an otter or a Pine Martin. Again, here in South Central PA, we aren't supposed to have these things. I know we hear a huge cat screaming occassionally. Sounds like the old lincoln-mercury cougar. Sometimes during the day, sometimes at night. Spring, summer Fall or winter. We just call it the "creature." It is doubtful that a large wild cat would be so visible or close to your home.
Another possibility would be a Maine Coon cat, they look huge and will weigh 30 lbs when full grown. They are very large domestic cats and come in all colors. Had a half maine coon cat about ten years ago. It got up to 17 pounds.

A fisher and a pine marten are two different animals. They are both in the weasel family but are not the same. There are always sightings of animals that could be mountain lions, cougars pumas etc.in areas where they are not supposed to be.They are no doubt in areas where fish and game depts would like not to admit but the odds of one being black are almost impossible in the wild.

I saw a large Black Cat in the 70s at Fort Ord, California. This Cat's body was close to 5 ft long and the tail was around 4 ft. Yellow eyes and slinkly looking. I got a close look too it was about 10 ft from me it had slipped up behind me out in the woods. I looked it right in the eyes and did not know what to do? I looked away then back at it. It decided not to eat me and turned around and walked off. I will never forget that event and a lot of people said I was crazy but I know what I saw and it was close enought to know darn well it was not a dog and stayed long enough close to me I could see details about it. The Eyes were something you never want to look into if your not on the outside of a cage at a Zoo! My hands were not even big enought to go around the mouth and the Paws were real big! Mark H.

This is what I saw. I did some resarch and found the Jaguars from South America have made it up to the USA and there bodies can get up to 6 ft not including the tails and weigh 250 lbs. The one I saw must have been close to that in weight. His hair was a little thicker but the face looked just like this Jaguar did and eyes were were the same. This is not a tall tail either. Fort Ord Calif has a very large area of remote woods on it. Mark H.

Went to the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife. Y'all have black bears out there. You also have cougars and bobcats, not to mention coyotes. Go to the site, its got lots of info.

I live in south western N.Y. state. I have always heard tell of black panthers and mountain lions seen in these here parts. I always took such tales with a grain of salt (considering the source you would too.). Yesterday on my way to work a very large cat crossed the road in front of me. This cat was the size of a medium dog. The fur was very dark but not as black as a black house cat. I've seen many a dog and this didn't walk or act like a dog. People here at work told me they have been sightings of the same type around Roulette PA. Where I saw the cat was not very far from Roulette. I am a believer now. The state DEP and other naysayers be dammed.
