Went to throw out the boxes in cardboard dumpster at work and lo and behold there on top is a brand spanking new Oreck XL Professional vacuum sitting on top of the boxes. Plugged it in to see if it works and it doesn't but I'm not to be daunted so I take it home and disassemble the handle, one little wire plug was separated, plugged it back in and she works like a charm... it's nice getting a $500 vaccum for free :-)

Apartment complex dumpsters are the same way.
My son almost completely furnished his first apartment that way!

I smell the potential for a redneck joke in there somewhere.

Yep, he had a most eclectic decor and not a penny of credit card debt.
Smart boy.

I used to dumpster dive, now you're lucky to find a dumpster open. Most have switched to compacters or padlock them shut. As for the colleges, they keep the stuff and hold auctions.geez...........

I work in a college town. My SiL used to deliver mail in town around the college area. You wouldn't believe the stuff those kids throw away when they move out in the spring.

our dump makes a small effort to recycle - mostly by overlooking those of us with pickup trucks making the big effort. every fall, the cabin people haul new stuff to the dump and go south. tires are plentiful, all kindsa white goods that can be combined into a nice functional one, toilets & plumbing fixtures that never fit their decor, that sorta stuff. heck between that and auction sales, quite a few old guys are kept outa bars. we winter it over in pole barns and every spring, they buy it back from us off a roadside trailer :)
