This break in has got me thinking about some sort of security system. Like ADT. Does anybody have any experience with this?

Get a loud barking dog.

Thats the best security system you can have.

BOSS, that does not always work.
I know a young couple who bought a place out in the country, they both worked in town so the place was empty during the day.
They had a good dog, one who barked.
They came home from work found their dog murdered and every stick of furniture, clothing and appliances GONE.

It was devastating. Their insurance covered it all and they replaced everything. They figured someone had to have pulled a moving van up to it in broad open daylight. Two weeks later there was a repeat preformance, everything gone!!

They left the house and never went back. Put it up for sale. It is a horrible thing to go through. People who do that should be shot and killed.

Lenore, we disagree on a few things, but I am in perfect agreement on your feelings in your post. I used to leave my garage door open in Ca, and the neighbors would tell me to close it at night. I always figured it was my garage, not anyone elses. I got hit one night, not bad, but I could have shot them and gone back to sleep with a smile on my face

you might want to look at x10.com. different systems and options. one of my students fathers house was hit. guys took a one-ton van body truck up to three houses in a row, then hit the interstate. a passer by gave the description of the truck to police, caught them a few miles from Durham Nc. several months ago a van body truck pulled in my driveway, the kids inside seemed to notice me in the yard. they pull out went down the road turned around and left the way they came. i now wished i had checked them out. i have the feeling they were out to clean someones house out. you cannot protect your property 24-7. you've got to work sometime. stealing is their work.

Charles, I own a small landscaping business and take care of 30 or so houses. Most of my customers are weekenders from NYC. The first thing they do is get an alarm installed. Several of them have me as the call if the alarm goes off guy. Pain in the butt if the window they forgot to close closes suddenly and makes the alarm go off! Also a sense of comfort for them to have I'm sure. Are you close to the Police station? Takes a while for them to get here, too long usually if there was a problem. If you do install one I would get one with a siren , that sure wakes up the neighborhood and gets them to look out the windows.

Charles, get your self a litterbox trained OZARK Razorback. Then you don't even need to do the SSS or lock your doors either, there isn't even enough left to bother with, not much bone in a lower leg that's left behind any way.

Radio shack has security system that are wireless, and can be set up to call neighbor or friend. Cost about 150.00 to 250.00 depending on what you want to accomplish. Beware of Dog signs work too, or Forget the Dog Beware of Owner, but note this could bring on aggression if raided.
I have security lights that go on and off, and found security camera for 29.00 at Habor Frieght that hooks into VCR. Hide the VCR good if you chose this route. Camera is small and picture is a bit grainy, but you can definetly see them if they cross it's peremeter. You have to run a small wire that comes with it, so it's not to difficult to install. You can also post signs as to having security on property.
Hope this helps you'll note that the security systems can be set up in two zones. One that trips when door is opened and the other is motion detectors. Use both when gone and use door closed/open switches when sleeping. You'll also have ro purchase siren, any they have will do just fine.
It's a shame that we have to go to these extremes to protect our hard earned keep.
Check with police in your area about drug use in area, as you may find this is the key to most recoveries they make. Rule of thumb someone passing by to go to Dealers house may have noticed your Keep.
My parents simply put a sign up that reads "Trespassers will be shot, Survivors will be shot agian" it's worked for them.
