Planting a Hedge Row

Any one here ever tried to plant a hedgerow?
I have been thinking about doing it for some time.
Time to gather the apples.
How many apples does it take?
I'll be putting them in 55 gal drums.
How far will I get with one drum?
How should I store them over the winter?
One got any tips on planting or preparing for planting?
I guess they could be trimmed with a gas powered hedge trimmer to keep them thick and uniformed.

Try this, do a Google search for "Osage ORange" or "Maclura Pomifera".

One more question.
How long will it take to grow to an effective size?

I just read that in 5 years Osage Orange can be 12 feet tall....I am thinking that to make it a dense hedge, it should be trimmed before that. I am planting rows as windbreaks and fences for my goats - if it kept pigs in traditionally, it will keep goats in!
