when we were kids they kinda free-ranged the place - oh we fenced off the garden and whatnot - so they rooted around and ate whatever they dug, mostly plant roots - used to spend alot of time around low spots and popple trees, in the shade of buildings and slept on the driveway. we'd throw a few corn stalks down so they'd have a treat and they got kitchen scraps. so grew all summer and by fall were feisty and lean as a dog - then about september we'd pen them up and start making them fat with creamcans full of outmeal. in 2-3 weeks we had the prettiest bacon & hams you ever saw - mostly meat with little strips of lard running thru not this modern greasy stuff. we'd can some with venison for next summer. either they made it or not and nearly all did - no modern chemicals needed. :)

They love snakes too. I have seen them drop down on their front knees and attack water mosicans...these east texas piney woods rooters have heavy shields of tallow on their sides and snake bites, buck shot and stuff like that dont go through them. They just love snake meat. So do Opossums too but they mostly like copper heads.

Anything they can get their jaws around.

Seriously, pretty much everything you would eat if you were in the woods.

A lot of roots, crops if they can get to them, grasses, bark, nuts, acorns, they will also eat meat if they can get it, but I don't think they eat carrion. I may be wrong.

Well when I say carrion I mean like rotting meat. The stuff that armadillos and buzzards go after. I don't know why they wouldn't eat it, I just didn't know for sure.
