Took our three 7 month old Tom's in to the butcher today. The butcher says they will dress out at 40 pounds each approximately. The lady in front of us was so proud of her 2 year old turkey, that will dress out at 15 pounds. Ours were Bronzes, her's was a Bourban. Guess there is big difference in the breeds.

Anyone have any suggestions on how to cook a 40lb bird?

FIRST you locate a great big roasting pan!

My son in law raised show turkeys, they are big.
He sawed them in half and just cooks a half at a time.

I am wondering if my roasting pan is big enough for a 24 pounder.
That is what I am cooking for Christmas.
Yes, already thinking and planning for Christmas.

The other day I watched my neighbor halve his 40 pound turkey with a Sawzall(sp?) He did have a blade he only uses for butchering ;-).

Sometimes during the summer we would get turkey peaces, thighs, turkybrest and cook them on the grill.
