Reading about people's resentment towards Wal-Marts last night and listening to the worry about illegal immigrants on television this morning makes a person wonder, what's going on.
At the start of all this argument many decades ago, it was argued that the reason for WW 1 and 2 was world trade, and that America and Northern Europe had to realise that the third world wanted the same things that we Americans did. And tv was getting into the huts before food in most third world countries,(governments were making sure of that). They were seeing what we had and they wanted it. So we had to help them out and make some concessions, or they would join the communist conspiracy and become our enemies as did North Korea and North Vietnam. I believe this was basicly true. And yes, it's all about money and jobs.
Well now the Berlin wall has come down and the Vietnamese have all but rejected communism and Russia has become almost a friend. Even China has virtual capitolism.
So why are we so worried? Since the Hiroshima bombing, the wars we have been involved in would only be battles when compared to WW 2. Basically we have won them all, except nutty North Korea which is, I believe, now trying to shed it's nutty dress with as little shame as possible. And in the long run we won the Vietnam war when the Berlin wall came down.
Things have never been better in this country from a economic point of view, in spite of all the grumbling. Even the unemployed are better off than people during the depression.
Could it be just plain old greed or are there legitimate worries out there?

You make some valid points. However, the poor today are not better off than the poor of the 20's. IMHO.

When my grandmother died at home of consumption (TB) her children ate stale bread and maple syrup (which they tapped and boiled down)all winter. Try finding free maple syrup in the big city.

The family members who had, helped.
They managed somehow on love, music and religion.
Are there extended families of un-hyphenated American-Canadians in the big cities who help each other? Seems to me the Yuppie dream did not include extended family. Am I wrong?

Yesterday, Rush Limbaugh was talking about his grandfather and how the topic of debate back when he was in high school (circa 1910) was "Immigration from Southern Europe is ruining this country".
The more things change, the more they stay the same.

Rush is usually close to the truth. Maybe he should run against Hilary in 2008. Wouldn't that be fun.

It'll never happen. I'm hoping for Rudy Guiliani.

Problem is, Rush is always one sided. Does he ever say where all the people are going to work again that have lost jobs, jobs that you can support a family on?

be careful believing rush too: that rehab business was a face-saver for him. yes he was addicted to prescription drugs but the truth is: the cops knew about it from an employee of his, and started raising such a stink with his doctors, he had little choice but to admit himself. and it wasn't rehab - it was cleaning his system out. rehab comes later. and sounds better than the shuddering sh!ts. btw, he cut/ran early and is back on the same dam drugs. :)

You mean Rush really has things that he believes in? What a concept. He'll never make a moderate.

It's Wal-Mart and all the other big industries that lobbied for the illegal immigrants amnesty. Another union busting campaign by big business and the Republicans. They will spend billions for cheaper and cheaper labor now garranteed for years to come. Next we will annex Mexico as the 51st state. Where do you think this free trade thing is going anyway. Think 100 or 200 years ahead.

Not to worry about the jobs, you can work at McDonalds and borrow the 275,000 for the new house, and get a 12 year loan for that new SUV bus.
