Regarding TO35's post below about hummingbirds. Got me wondering if any of you put up gourds or martin houses and what success you have. I have had 12 gourds up for a couple of years and have had about 50% occupied. I think their reputation for mosquito control is over rated but they sure are entertaining to watch. Is this post too controversial?

Boy, was I surprised! Not what I was expecting.... I read Purple Martians.
Not Martins.... I thought maybe the Mars rover was sending back some good pics!

Exactly what I was thinking just as I hit the submit button. I said Lord I hope I didn't spell "Martians". But maybe if Bush gets his wish list they may actually find Martians of one stripe or another.

Cosmo! How DARE you cast ASPERSIONS at Purple

On a more serious note, I read a few studies that show
that they don't select mosquitoes over other food at any
level high enough for them to be effective at mosquito
control. They are cool though. I plan on putting some
bat houses up for the same reason - coolness.

Yup, bats are becoming the big rage lately. You can find housing plans on the Internet and many stores now sell bat houses. Been putting up Wood duck houses last couple years. Another nice endeavor.

Afraid to put up any bat houses. My mother in law might move in !

However I have a couple of Martin condos. Seems to drop the mosquito population somewhat. They are neat birds. You need to clean out the old nests each year.

Yes and it helps to close them up during the off season.
If you dont those "undesirable" birds move right in and trash up the condos.
