If it is a Well Pump and designed for use in a casing you should put it in a PVC sleeve to cause the water to flow past the motor to cool it better. It dose this in a well casing to help cool it while running. Laying on it side won't hurt it nor will short time use with out a sleeve. The sleeve is needed for continous running for a long time.
