Why is it that when our Federal tax is cut, the State and local taxes go up? It appears that what is given us by the Feds is taken away by local municipalities!

in theory it's "redistribution of funds" anyway - the govt is supposed to gather money and use it on public projects that are beyond the means of individuals. in practice it's "let's let poor kids go homeless and build a ball stadium for the 6th richest man in the state." corruption starts at home. (grrr)

There's a couple words I can think of which defines such an operation. Both end with ...nism.

I live in Tn that has no state income tax, but my local sales tax is almost 10%. Last year the legislators attempted to get a state income tax passed, secret meeting at midnight on a saturday night. Local radio station(anti-tax) got wind of it and urged all citizens to rally at the capitol building, blowing horns etc..It worked. They attempted the ploy that if you weren't for an income tax, you were against education. So when they passed the 9billion $ budget, teachers only got a 2% increase, government workers got 4%. I live near the Ky line, 6% sales tax, and no tax on food. Guess where I shop.

But you're thinking wrong. The federal government doesn't "GIVE" anything because they have nothing. They only have what they confiscate from us, the taxpayers. How is this confiscated? We give them permission, by our ballots, or lack of casting same ballots.
Don't think this is beyond your controll, it's not, not as long as you vote each and every election. If that doesn't work, then it's time for you to run for office!!

What? You mean actually take some responsability upon ourselves? Are you nuts? Lol. That would mean giving up a few hours of Tv every week or so. Surely you can't be serious. It's just way too easy to let things go awry and BIT** about it instead. Lol (Major sarcastic grin!!)

Depens on where you are at. Wyoming's taxes arn't going up. I think you need to look at your state government and get them to cut back on spending.

Agreed, with all of the above. As soon as you think the government has to take care of you, you might as well give up. The government only takes. It makes nothing, it earns nothing. That is all done be working taxpayers.
Here in NH, we are well known for being stingy on our taxes. For at least 50 years, there have been people trying to ram a sales and/or state income tax down our throats, predicting doom and gloom if we don't. Well, we've managed to stave them off all these years and we're no worse off than most other states financially and a lot better than most of them which tax everything that moves and breathes.
Right now, we have a governor who is right on top of this spending business (just try to get your entrenched interests to actually cut something and listen to them howl). Virtually all the state employees hate this governor. Which to me is a good sign that he is on the right track. He shall have my vote for another term in November.
