Rat Infestation
[Return to Topics]

Walt    Posted 12-11-2001 at 09:52:02       [Reply]  [Send Email]
I have a rat infestation problem in my barn, probably due to the availability of feed from the hog pens, I am concerned about using poison, been using nail a bait, hard disk like poison with hole in the middle, hole in middle is for nail so it can't be carried away from the area, like into the reach of a hog or other animal. They've been eating it, but it doesn't seem to be decreasing their population, is there another approach I can take?

Any advice appreciated.

Walt

I've just been shooting them with a pellet gun,and when you miss n' hit something loud{metal} they make the most hilariuos moves.
Someone just told me if you feed them bubblegum they can't get rid of it and kind of explode. Is this true?

You've come to right board!

Step right up and try IHANK's "DIY Rodent
killer". (checkout page 2, or maybe 3 now). He's
our board's critter expert.

Store the feed, mix yourself 10 lbs of
flour,10 lbs of carbonate of soda,10 lbs of sugar
and you'll have them dead not only in your own barn, but probably through the county too.

You could even be generous and had a dish of water to help wash things down.

Good luck

Thanks, I will give it a try, was afraid, the other animals would get into it, like cats, dogs horses and hogs.

At a near by horse farm, they had a bad problem with rats. One guy came up with the idea of putting out small amounts of actual SODA for them to drink. Rats can't burp so it would kill them.

Which soda is the real killer?

The barrel traps work great. We use them in the 5 gal. size in an out building. We placed a home-made wire basket in the bucket to make removal easier.

Walt, my friend, you can relax. I've got 6 bushels of cats headed your way via truck freight. Should be there tomorrow morning. You're welcome!

Your Buddy, Dan

Just thought i'd throw this in. Alberta is a rat free province; one of the few places in the world. We've had a rat patrol and rat extermination program here for many years. Because most of our citizens have never even seen a real rat any potential siting is reported fast.

Don't know if it'll work, tried cats once. Think they were scared (y) cats...dang got the wrong kind...but I did see on TV ( so ya know it's true) that a "rat terrier" is named that for a very good reason.......Kill 'em all. please? I hate them little )((&)^, had one jump right at my face when I was shelling corn once, if it wasn't for natural reaction and a scoop shovel, well as it is... that little ()*&(*^ ain't eatin corn no more

We had rats so bad we gave up on poison and just started shooting them with a 22. When it was abought dark they would all head for the corn crib we would just shoot till we couldn't see anymore. that helped and was fun too, but the real deal closer was the bloodhound basset mix dog I got. I'll put him up against the best dozen cats any one has, rats don't stand a chance, mice better look out, and best of all there aint a ground hog on my place.

I used to have a bad Mouse & Rat problem in my shop a friend gave me 4 kittens I turn them loose in the shop fed them a just little about everyday. It was not long till I never saw a mouse or rat anywhere on the place. They even got rid of my copper head snakes. I will never forget the first time I saw one running around with a big old snake in it mouth. Part of them are still here but they are so wild you can't get near them.

We used to use "barrel traps".55 gal drum w/top cut out, then pivoted(-O-)like a trap door, corn bait glued on lid and an access ramp(1x2).They climb to get at the corn, lid flips droppin em in the barrel,a foot or so of water/AFreeze mix does the rest.I use 5gallon version in my out buildings for meeses, got a couple dozen last winter.

In my apt here in the Big Apple I use these big glue traps near the radiator. Works so far.
