Today I found a worm swimming in water on the
concrete in front of my shop, It is about 8"
long and about as big as a horse hair, We have
10 cats and 1 dog, what might it be?

This is hard to identify without being able to examine it firsthand. If it were whitish and looked like a strand of spaghetti, it might be a roundworm. Adult and larval whipworms, hookworms, and threadworms are small and very fine; they are not generally visible to the naked eye without a lot of squinting or auxiliary magnification. It might not even be a parasitic worm, but rather some natural inhabitant of soil in your region. Your local vet or extension agent might be able to i.d. it for you.

Did it have rattles on the tail?

Maybe a whipworm, or threadworm? I've seen some in puddles after it's rained, but they weren't as long. I bet old cuss will know.

Hey, Phyllis, good to see you posting again.
I remember seeing something like you describe years ago swimming in a reservoir (the worm was swimming, not me) and thinking what a gross looking thing it was. Almost sinister looking. I would say that the one I saw was more like a foot long and white. Hope somebody knows the answer.

BIN LADEN. Doesn't he qualify?
