I was on the way back to the farm to go fishing when I happend upon a young feller pushing a bicycle, I relized his front wheel was bent and it was about a mile in either direction to a house.
I slowed my truck down rolling my window down and hollered to the little feller yo...hey Buddy you need a lift home, No sir he replied. It took both of us a minute to recognize each other. Hey Mister Robert he belted out with a squeaky voice. Hey there little Mike I says. Sure you don't need a lift, well Mr. Robert, mom said becareful and don't talk to strangers but I know you could you help me please.Well sure thing I said.
I stopped the truck and got out and hosisted his BMX bicycle into the truck, hop on in I said. Starting back down the road little Mike asked where I was going, I said over to the pond, saw a few fish I'd like to try and catch.
I glanced over into his eyes and they were almost smiling at me. You reckon your mom would let you go over fishing with me. Yes sir,Yes sir...Ok I said we'll stop and ask. Little mikes mom came out as I pulled up and I rolled the window down and asked if it would be ok for little mike to go with me, she said sure about how long , A couple of hours I guess...well Ok. I'll drop him back off here when we leave ok...ok she replied.
Got to the pond and got all the gear out and walked around the dam to the spill pipe...sure enough the crappie where still swimming around it. I quickly rigged up the bream buster with a bobber and cricket and said little mike try that spot right there. Yes Sir, he grabbed the pole and swung it right on the spot..I watched expecting him to catch the first fish as I rigged up my reel with a bobber and hook.
I tossed it to the other side of the pipe and finally settled down and waited. The wind blew kinda hard and we sat and talked about bicycles and fishing and hunting among other things. And after a couple of hours we had not even got a bite, I tried everything I had in the tackle box, but to no avail, they just were not biting.
We loaded up and I dropped little mike back at home as promised. His mom came out and asked if we had caught anything, Mike replied no mam but I sure had a good time.
Little Mike and his mom both thanked me as I drove off,I did'nt gave it much thought but I had a good time too.I'm home now just pulled off my boots and thought I'd share todays fishing exploits with you all. One 10 year old kid, an Old man and No fish....but what the heck I had a good time...

i remember a couple times like that - when it seemed like maybe fishin would be better than not so we went. one time my puter guru tim (oh he's scary on a keyboard) needed a break so we took the boat - caught some perch so we anchored shallow & spent the rest of the afternoon trying to get a seagull to pick one up. something was still eating him so i finally asked if he could have anything he wanted, what would it be. he said to make every dam rock in hillview township disappear. i reminded him that they already did - can't see any from the boat can you? :) man he perked right up. yup sometimes a guy needs a break. even a little guy.

A whole lot of good stuff happened here. Ya both had a good time. Mike had your undivided attention. You had a child to pass some wisdom onto. He most likely learned a whole lot of fishing savy if not successful today, perhaps another tomorrow. Coming and going, I envy both of ya. Good times like these have to happen, not be planned.
God Bless.

TO, fishing is not always about catching. It's nice when you catch em. however, it's nice even when they don't bite. Remember what they say: A bad day of fishing is better than a good day at work. And, in your case, you most likely gave Mike a priceless memory that'll last a lifetime. So, on behalf of all the Mikes in the world, here's a great big thanks......gfp
