I read the replies about the veterans card below. When someone mentioned "carry a ....card" it reminded of something from the past.
I remember as a young boy hearing a couple of adults describe one of our neighbors as "a card-carrying member of the John Birch Society".
I haven't thought of them in ages. Anybody else here know what I am talking about? Younger folks probably won't have a clue.

I had always thought the the John Birch ociety was an organization dedicated to preserving freedom under the United States Constitution.

Formed in the 1950's due to all of the Anti Communist propaganda.

I always understood it as a anti-communist organization, named after the first cold war casualty.

As far as I know, the John Birch Society is still going strong. It's a conservative organization. I wouldn't be ashamed to be a "card carrying member" but I'm not.

You may be right. I just remember that at the age of 9 hearing folks in a Democrat controlled region talk in hushed voices about those "John Birchers".
