I just don't think she is gonna be a good protector of the chicks. :( I don't understand why she did what she did today. She doesn't try to eat Sasha, so why, when I show her the chicken, held in my hand, did she promptly reach with her mouth, as if I were giving her a dog treat, and try to gently take it's head off???

Then I got to thinking. I made chicken Fahitas tonight. I always take the trimmings from the chicken breasts and cook them up for her. I called her, and said, "Hey Tip! You want some chicken, too?" and then gave her the bowl of chicken. Five minutes later, I am in the room with the chicks, and one of them has poopy foot, so I take it out and with a damp paper towel I get it's foot all clean. Tip is standing there, so I say, "Hey Tip, wanna see the baby chicken?" and then she was a bad dog. So, like Charlie Browns teacher this is what she hears:

WA Tip! WA WA WA Chicken WA? and then she hears:

WA Tip! WAWA WA WA WAWA Chicken?

SO she associates the word chicken with food, GREAT. Guess I will have to call the chickens something else. Any suggestions?

Maybe once they are grown she will be okay. She gets along with the cats and the cockateil, so why not the chickens?

Hey Kelly, my Border Collie herds the chickens around the yard and barn everyday. He has never hurt any of them, ever! He did do something bad, chicken related though....why, I'll never know.
Cody did all the chores for me one day. Collected all the eggs and had everything done for me by the time I got home from work. The next morning he came to me with this sheepish look on his face, and asked me if I happened to get the eggs from the collecting basket we use, and put them away? I told him "no, I hadn't touched the eggs, why, where were they?" He kinda' got this horrified expression, and said "well, you might want to use the other door this morning to go out to your truck!" Duke, our Border Collie, had eaten 11 raw chicken eggs, and two raw turkey eggs. The eggs had been left in the basket out in the porch area where the dog sleeps. There was absolutely NO evidence of there ever having been eggs out there, but Cody said it smelled worse than a bar room full of beer drinking men who had been eating pickled eggs for a week.

years ago our dog was caught mouthing an egg, and dad thought well i'll get the 22. can't have a farm dog that eats eggs. but then he saw the dog trot up under the porch, and there he had gathered a whole nest of them! so we candled them all and replaced the whole lot with a few wooden eggs and after that we had another place to look. it was handy too cuz he could get betwween haybales and find the hidden ones. he never did eat one. :)

Ewww! I bet he didn't do that again! Funny now, but I know it wasn't then! I figured she might herd them when they are grown. She helped me herd a lone duck into our back yard and into a carrier one time, never got too close. Took the duck to the nature preserve, and it lives happily there now. She learned quickly how NOT to act around Sasha, so she respects her, when I tell her BAD DOG, it really hurts her feelings, thats like the worst thing you can do, she knows you are very disappointed in her. I hope she will get better. I will just have to make her understand she can't eat them, just like she can't eat anybody else here in the house, lol.
