My 12 year old son has many, many warts on the bottom of his feet. I'm not sure if these are plantar warts? (They are inside the sole not sticking out). I am planning on making him an appointment with either a podiatrist or dermatologist. Are there any suggestions on what kind of removal works the best for this type of wart? Anyone with experience on this type of wart, please contact me! Thank you!

Just a suggestion, after treating my daughters plantar wart with a prescription acid and then switching to the Dr. Scholl's medicated pads, I opted to try something that cured warts on her fingers last summer. Would you believe milk from a milkweed plant cured it. We soaked her foot for about 5 minutes then roughed it up with a nail file, put a few drops of milk from a leaf we snapped off a milkweed plant and covered it with a band-aid. By weeks end it was gone! Give it a try. Good luck.

or so. Ususally in the sole area. I ignore them until they hurt. I have cut them out - you can pull on them when soft and see a separation from the healthy sole-while pulling gently cut away the debis. Keep gnawing away each night for about a week until you get down to some weird looking fibrous area. I froze them one with Liquid nitrogen from work - it didn't hurt alot until 6 hours later then WOW! Usually when I get one or two to go away the rest follow without having to touch them. Hope this information is of some use. Ray

My wife gets plantar warts too. She had one
removed when she was in her teens by the
freezing method, but by her description it
wasn't a terribly fun process.
Now whenever one gets to acting up she
paints on a little tea-tree oil and some vitamin
E. The vitamin comes in gel-caps and she
opens the cap and squeezes some on. I'd
guess this works in the same way the other
guys suggestion does, the vitamin E softens
things up and draws the tea-tree oil in to kill
the virus. Paint the stuff on each evening, put
on a bandaid and go to sleep. If they're really
bothering her she'll get some of the "doctor
sholes" planter wart killers and put one of
those on under the bandaid (because
otherwise the planter wart killer thing ends up
floating around in bed, usually on my side.)
She'll only use the wart killer for a couple
nights because they can hurt.My wife's warts never really go away, but don't
really bother her. She has to do the treatment
a couple days every 4-5 months. I'm
convinced if she could remember to keep at it
that she could get rid of them completely, she
just can't remember to keep at it.

| Currently, my daughter's wart-covered foot is wrapped in duct tape. We'll keep you posted.... Her brother thinks it is the next trend and has his wartless foot wrapped too. We'll keep you posted on that too....

Gardening Australia, a program on the ABC had a rememdy to kill warts, it's the blood of a stem of a plant that is orange, and you paint it on. I've contacted G.A but they're not sure offhand, they have a factsheet archive but i was unable to find it in mysearch. I got myfirst wart a yearto2 years ago, on the joint of my big toe(onthe top) and then one gradually appeared underneath my nailon my middle finger on my left hand, it's causing havoc with thegrowth of my nail and the one on myfoot too. which has just recently grown back, as it gotknocked off. The daughter of afriend of minewho was 5 was dancing around mesitting down in a chairwith bare feet, she was wearing thongs and kicked my wart halfoff! lots of blood, sore, i just stopped the bleeding andcovered it,more so that i wouldn't getblood everywhere at my friends house.. acoupleof days later half of it peeled off dry,seperate..ileft it then soon i noticed that it all hadfallen off . icouldsee the 'dot' in the middle where it used to be that was the root, i thought yey it'sgone but it's coming back. If anyone finds this orangeblooded plant, i'dlove to know! or anyother 'natural' methods for killing warts.

I have had a planter wort on the bottom of my foot for years and it always felt like I was standing on a rock.It hurt like hell.Then I saw an artical in the paper about using duct tape to rid of warts.I tried it and have been using it for 2 months now.The wart is almost gone and pain free.what I do is every day after i shower I take off the tape and shave the wart down with a razor blade,then I put liquid wart remover and then a new piece of duct tape.the skin will keep dyeing around it so you can shave deeper and deeper and eventualy you will cut out the root.why pay a doctor to do what you can do your self.It takes a while but its worth it...good luck

| Lisa: Sorry to hear about the warts. As stated previously, warts are caused by a virus. You must remove all the virus to completely remove the wart. The most common treatment done today is to freeze the wart using liquid nitrogen. For warts on the feet (plantar warts), a scalpel is often used to remove the dead skin. This just allows the liquid nitrogen to penetrate better (i.e. freeze deeper). Depending on how deep the wart goes, multiple treatments may be required. It does hurt to freeze warts. I have tried it on myself and it hurts about as much as a needle being slowly pushed into the skin. When freezing a wart, it is sometimes difficult to judge just how deep to freeze. If the freeze is too shallow, nothing happens to the wart. If the freeze is too deep, large blood blisters can form. If your son can deal with some pain, freezing is the recommended method. Some derm people will use lasers for really stubborn warts. The concept is still to destroy the skin that is infected. Other options do exist. You could apply Duoplast (an acid paste) to the wart after a shower. Then you cover the wart with duct tape. When the duct tape is removed on the next day, it pulls off the dead skin. You reapply Duoplast each day. This process can take months and some people develop an irritation to the duct tape. Your doctor could also apply a strong acid to the wart in the office. This hurts less than freezing, but takes many applications. There are other chemicals that can be used to destroy skin. Now the disclaimer. I am a family doc and successfully treat warts all the time, but do not go by my advise. Your son should see his doctor and not rely on the above description. Best of luck. Douglas Stockman, MD

Sorry to hear that your son has those awful warts. Does he take showers at his school? He may be picking them up there so make sure that he always wears shower sandles when taking showers away from home.

| I've got 3 or 4 on each foot. They are on the front part(ball?) and one big toe. They are painful. I've been tolerating them for several years now, but need to do something. I've also got some flat ones on my hands. They almost went away one time, but then came back. I'll check on the strong iodine. Dan, what is DMSO? Can you but it without a prescription? Good Luck Lisa! Let us know what works. I would stay clear of the surgery. One guy told me the scars hurt worse than the warts.

GREAT WEB INTERACTION!! At last I know I am not alone in my suffering!!
I had two on the sole of my left foot and three on the sole of my right. I picked them up from the gym showers (obviously exercise IS bad for me!!)..but they didn't bother me. Being a lady, thought it cosmetically best to have them attended to. In January 2003, the Podiatrist burned them off with liquid nitro. After I had scraped myself off the ceiling (where my pain threshold had pushed me), and hobbled home, I was amazed by how long the pain and inconvenience lingered and lingered. Why don't these medicos TELL YOU what to anticipate?! By March, I was still in agony... PLUS the left foot had turned into a blood blister, and the right foot had 'gone forth and multiplied' into many warts. The Good News was that I didn't have to go to Gym! I went instead to a Dermatologist, for a second opinion. He said you should NEVER burn the soles of the feet - only excise .. which he duly did under local anaesthetic. But he did this so casually, didn't even book me off work, that I thought it was a little minor procedure. HA! I am now four weeks down the line of this second Torture by Footloose Physicians.. having experienced continual pain, the horror of using crutches, and a grinding to a halt of Life as I Knew It. Again .. no forewarning nor preparation from the medic. At least if you knew what to expect, you could better cope with the results. I live on my own ... and having to battle and manage work and traveling and shopping etc, has been a nightmare. I am still not over it all; the left foot is not sore.. but the right foot is still very tender and painful.. I am turning socks (well one sock, anyway) into a Fashion Statement around the office. And walking on tiptoe is giving me the greatest calf (one only) muscle in the Universe.
So I say: Salute to us PW Survivors! We deserve $1 million for Surviving our ordeals!!

DMSO...Dimethyl Sulphur Oxide...I think.
I understand it is the same penetrant used in WD-40. It's use was a fad, some years back, as a relief from arthritis. It is available in pharmacutical quality, but you may have to have a prescription. It is available at most janitorial supply stores in industrial quality. I feel like that is pretty harmless, sorta like IHank huffing his welding oxygen, but I'll leave that decision to the user.

| Dan has it. We have always used 'strong' Iodine Tincture...this is NOT the one that you normally get over the counter in the small bottles...that will be in the neighborhood of 3% iodine and 2% potassium iodide...the one you want may have to be ordered...there is no prescription but most pharmacies do not carry it...it will be 7% Iodine and 5% Potasium Iodide in 85% alcohol...it will be labeled 'Strong Iodine Tincture'...penetrates better due to the high alcohol and will work...dab it on the affected area (only the wart) 4-5 times daily and it will kill those suckers...

Lisa, I was plagued by those Plantar warts, or "Sole" warts for years. We tried "Compound W," when it first came out. It caused pain, both from the burning, and from the buildup, like having rocks in your shoes.
When I was in my twenties, they came back. I had one as large as a silver dollar, and several smaller ones. An old fashioned Doctor helped me get rid of them, for good. He "pared" the warty material off, with a scalpel, then painted the area with DMSO, and Betadine, alternately. He then gave me a scalpel, a bottle of DMSO, and a bottle of Betadine, and told me to repeat the procedure twice a day, till the DMSO was gone. I did that, and the warts disappeared, and have never returned.
He explained that the DMSO, a penatrant, carried the Betadine down into the wart, so it could kill the viruses that caused it.

| Can you tell me what the DMSO is and where I might find it? My son is 6 and he has warts all over his big toe on one foot only. I am trying to find a cure before he has to go through all the pain and suffering of having them frozen and cut off. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks in advance

My brother is an iron worker and got planters warts on the bottoms of his feet. The sweety boots made it a perfect environment for them to grow and multiply. His got so bad he couldn't hardly walk so had surgery on one foot at a tme. Yes, it did help but he also understood that planters warts have very deep roots and that they can come back. Fortunately his didn't but surgery is no guarentee. Now days there may be other ways of treating them that is more effective. I agree about getting several opinions before you decide and even do some research on your own on the net so you can ask the doctors about what you find. Good luck. Planters warts can be really miserable!!

Hi Lisa,
My son had them also on the fingers. At the time he was biting his fingernails and the warts spread to his mouth. He really had a bad case of them. His mother wanted to make him have surgery, but I took him to University of Alabama in Birmingham (great medical facility). After discussing the pros and cons with the doctors, I decided to do nothing as the warts will go away in time. They did go away and I'm really glad that I did not let his mother make him have surgery.
I suggest that you get several medical opinions. Personally, I would try to avoid surgery for my child. I did and I'm glad I did. It worked out great for him. If you need more info, post back and I will contact you. Good luck to your son.

I just took my son in to get one removed from his foot. The Dr. "froze" it with canned air. He put a very small funnel on his foot that only exposed the wart, then he sprayed the canned air into the funnel slowly so as to not have splash back into his eyes. He let the "gas" set until it had evaperated. We had to take Talon (my son) in twice as the first time wasn't enough. The wart area turned white from freezing and in a few days turned black and died then a few days later it fell off.

Sounds like when they got rid of the polyps on my neck. I had about 20. The Aussie doctor froze them with liquid nitrogen on a cotton swab. They stung a little afterwards (like little bee stings) but within 3 days they turned black & were gone. Works good - no scars.

Nathan, you can get 7% iodine at your local farm store. It's what we use for navels on newborn calves, lambs, goats, etc. For the DMSO--call your local tack store. They can order it for your HORSE. My bottle came in 16 oz. size for less than $10. Did you know that you can use DMSO and powdered vitamin C to remove heel spurs? You wear it as a poultice.
