I am trying to build a fishtrap to do it with. Just to many to get out with the old cane pole. Can anybody give me any suggestions on building a fish trap. Thanks for your help.

I have been fishing for trout and catfish for about 3 years. I have had no trouble at all catching trout but the cat fish are a hole other story. I would fish all day and not catch anything so I started thinking about it and I came up with a plan. I got a 2 litter soda pop bottle with a lid and tied 15 feet of 10 pound line on the neck of the bottle. At the end of the line I tied a trouble hook and put a pice of liver on the hook. That night I went to the lake and through the bottel in the lake. The next day my friend and I rented a row boat from the lake and went out to find my bottle. My friend said I was wasting my time. We looked for at lest 30 minuts and still no bottle. Then we spoted it in the reeds on on the other side of the lake. I could not beleave how far the bottle had moved over night. When we were pulling the bottle up I could tell that there was something on the line and sure enough there was. It was a 5 and 1/2 pound catfish.

This mite work for you.

P.S. You could do the same thing for bluegill. Just use a bobber in place of the bottle and some 4 pound line with a very small trouble hook. Try it for a week and see what you get.
Good Luck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

good idea. i've tried some fish traps for minnows and small blue gill. i used a 2 liter coke bottle and reversed the neck by cutting the top off and cutting holes to tie it the reverse way. then pop small holes in the side so it will sink. put some bait in the bottle through the hole, i used lunch meat.. within 15 minutes i had a small bluegill. its just fun to see if you catch any.

It is simple to make a trap from chicken wire that will catch plenty of blue gills.
Make a wire tube about 2 ft in diameter x 3 to 4 ft long with the wire. You can get d rings and a simple tool at a hard ware store cheap. Then make a funnel from the wire. One end should be the same size as the tube you have made. The other should have an opening 3 to 4 inches.Place this small end first into the wire tube. Posistion it so the small opening is in the center of the tube and clip it in place. Using 150 test line fold the other end flat and sew it closed. Leave the line so you can untie it to take out the fish. You should wind up with a wire basket flatened on one end and a funnel on the other.Bait it with dry dog food in an onion sack or mesh bag.Take it to the pond and place it in 3 to 4 ft of water. this will catch all kinds of fish. Control the size of the fish with the size of the funnel hole. send me a fax no. and I will fax you a plan. No charge
This is illegal to use in some public waters.Cost of each trap is about 3 dollars.

Get an empty 2-Liter bottle and put a few stones and worms (worms for bait & stones for bait) in it with the top funnel part of the bottle cut off & turned around.

Please reply if this works for you.

If you want homemade, take a cloths hanger-unfold it. Form a circle. Attach it to a rod. Take another one and make side forms going down the side like a tripod, joining at the bottom. Take the misses nylons and wrap around it.

I made one years ago out of wagon wheel steel hoops and fox pen wire ( same as chicken wire only heavier). It was basically done just like the minnow trap design. I used it in a river and had the open pointed down stream. It worked very well and I didn't use any bait.

Just net the things. Get a tennis net or 2, and decide if you can walk around the pond or surround a bunch with 2 boats. Or depending on fish/hole size, stake it underwater overnite.

BTW, i didn't tell you all this okay? - it's probly illegal cuz they're game fish. :)

What about something like a giant minnow trap? They are round with cone/funnel openings pointed in on each side. Primarirly designed for flowing water I think, but may work with a couple pieces of bread thrown in. Shouldn't be too hard to make. Just make on a larger scale, and use something like chicken wire or a little larger so the small fish can escape. See link for a pic of what I'm talking about.

Better idea-throw in 4 24" Pike. Problem will be solved very soon. Or go buy a smelt dipping rig.

If you pile up rocks from the shoreline a couple feet out and back to the shoreline in a circle and put bait in it like chicken and oily hotdogs and bread ( i would recommend oily hot dogs because it attracts the fish) stand there for a coulpe minutes or go for a swim and when there are a bunch of fish eating the hotdogs take a peice of wood and put it infront of the entrance make sure the entrance is pointing out ward toward the lake ... now u got your fish
