Gerrit and deadcarp were so helpful to me tonight with their web site hosting advice. I finally picked a service and ended up getting our family site published. Now it is not finished, so don't bust my chops too bad. I will be working on it over the next 3-4 days. I think it looks good enough to post to the board though. Below is the link if you care to view the Nut family. You have to visit the Photo Gallery though. All pics are G-rated (:^) Gerrit - My computer paranoia actually blocked me from publishing on the FTP ports. I shut my router down to the minimum to browse (but forgot I did that). I spent an hour on the phone with GoDaddy tech support and stumped them silly. They were very polite and more than willing to help me. I had to hang up and reconfig my router (Oops!). Now everything works great. Thought you might laugh. |

looks great so far peanut - you'll be running into the same hangup as everynody else - attention span. seems nobody can change it but people are in a hurry. most people give websites 3 seconds. by the time 7 seconds has gone by, if a page hasn't fully opened or caught their interest, they've sailed away into cyberspace to explore more friendly corner of it. here comes your pictures. even though superb, they're 4 times the size of my screen and i hafta shut everything else down to get one loaded in 4 minutes. i checked one and it needed 438,000 bytes - with practice you can compress a screen-sized jpg into about 70,000 bytes. i think my website background takes under 4,000 bytes. that's time to viewers. fun stuff but ticklish. oh, (and you'll believe this in a month) no need to be in a rush to perfect anything - it takes about a month to throw away the others and get your intro page to say what you want. keep a copy of the orginals tho, they're fun. :) |

thanks dc. I will have to figure out the photo compression thing. I have Photoshop so I can compress to whatever size I want. Just need to find the magical size that suits most browsers. |

I use 640 x 480 for landscape pics and 435 x 580 for portrait pics. Works great from 15" 800 x 600 monitors and upwards.. |

well you're off to a good start - properties can show you things inna hurry - here's a a page that takes 9100 bytes or mine takes just under 15,000 bytes so our websites are almost the same, you're always looking for a way to shrink memory and speed things up.. now it's a matter of how many bells & whistles you can cram in there. kountrylife takes like 51,000 bytes but a lot of it is stored in cookies so once it's loaded and your puter goes to its own files first, it'll zip a big page right open. as fas as compressing pictures, there's more than 1 way to skin that cat too - i currently use this picture for wallpaper - not that crazy about tile so i just stretch whatever it is. darned if i know why, but whoever made this picture
got sneaky and packed it into 56,000 bytes, pretty manageable, by shaving the width only. so once it stretches to 800 pixels wide, it still looks great. in other words, the stock height of my house copy is already 640 pixels tall. so never say never. :) |

You should really take a look at Gerrit's new site too. You will be able to help answer a lot of questions and give alternate solutions to Microscrap. - Peanut |
