I think it was pulled of extremely beautifully.

As far as I'm concerned, it once again showed the world what it means to live in a democratic society. A society that gives unto it's president all the pomp and ceremony befitting the highest office in the world.

Now, I know there are a few who would like to wake up tomorrow and find that President Bush's re-election was all a bad dream. Also, I know that there are some narrow minded, shortsighted individuals that continually cry about cost. When, in fact they use that cost complaint simply because their pick for president wound up in second place. The truth is, the ceremony and the cost associated therewith would have been about equal regardless of which party was in power.

So, in case anyone cares, I'm pleased with the way it was handled. And, the fact that I'm a dedicated conservative has nothing to do with it. Wellllll,... Ok.........maybe a little.......gfp

I liked it watched the whole thing to. I've seen lots of other thing the US wastes money on and this to me was not a waste. The gold plated Palase in India and those other countrys while there people/children lie in the streets starving is a waste to me. This is the USA and once every 4 years to woop it up being a free nation is not so bad. Glad we can still vote for our leaders! Besides it employed a lot of people to make it happen. Mark H.

Alias,

I agree completely! What a show! And Dubya's speech was brilliant! Haven't been affected like that by a President since Reagan. It's good to see a real person like Dubya in the White House, not a showman, but a genuine, honest person guided by his core values and not the latest polls. While I was not impressed with the amount of money spent, I also realize this is about "our" democracy and it's a great thing to show the world how truly awesome we are. Besides, it's not tax payer money, it's the rich fat cats that want a good excuse to light it up!

Interestly enough, for all you Clintonians out there, Bills 2nd inag cost $42 mil and if adjusted for inflation would have been $49.5 mil. Hmmm, how will the libs respond to that little nugget?

I must respectfully disagree. Dubya is my man, and I held my breath until he was re-elected, but the money spent on the second inauguration was a complete, sinful waste.

I think it should be illegal to spend taxpayer's money on parties, and doubly so for a president that's already had one and just needs to get back to work.

I've been reading comments on the inaugurational party in the international press.. "The world" wasn't that enthousiastic about the party and certainly doesn't think this party shows how good it is to live in a democracy.

Don't get me wrong, I live in a US territory and I'm happy to live here. As soon as I'm eligible I will applly for the US citizenship. I'm not interested in politics at all - lost interest a long time ago. Who is president of the USA is not really important to me..

It's just that I read in the thread about showing "the world" this and that.. Reality is "The world" looks at the USA with mixed feeling...

Let me give an example.

When a Texan band passed the Bush family they greeted the like this:

I read it is a 'Longhorn greeting"
In wide parts of Europe this gesture is used by punks and similar groups as a "devils greeting" In countries like Italy and in Latin america it is a big insult. ( meaning you are "gabron" - a goat - somebody who'se wife is untrue )

In some European newspapers I read this was the only reference to the inaugurational party..

The "whiners" throughout the rest of the world need to "get over it," especially before they come to us with their hats in their hands looking for money, or when they need to be bailed out after letting an enemy army take them over.

im sure it will get cold again, in a normal winter it would but this one hasn,t been normal, we have a 2 to 3 inches of snow at the most , some places we are down to the bare ground , horses are out grazing, we should have snow about 5 ft. deep on the ground right now,im hoping it stays like this and we get an early spring , lets hope.

A lot of people gripe about the cost, but they need to realize that most of the cost is not their money. Most is not funded by the taxpayers. Most is funded by private donations and private individuals or companies. So why should they gripe about how someone else spends their own money when they would also gripe if someone else complains about how they spend theirs?

It's sour grapes and they need to get over it. I did not support Pres Clinton but did not gripe about how private donors supported his balls, etc.

bad news my friend - i'm glad you're onto clinton but for that den of thieves you need a much broader brush. apparently you've been hoodwinked.

corporate america is not that dumb! why do you think they spend all that money? because they are not using their own money, they're currently using investors' funds & they're getting ready to use your taxes, that's why. before you pass me off as another old grouch, i encourage you to look at history. wait a year or so & add up the "exploration fees" and cost of research for the new-age nuclear plants they're hatching. corporate america should thank us now - that 40 million was a real bargain compared to what we'll pay in lost representation. .

and here's something that's wasting billions right now: all that nasa-mars crap we're buying? the minute there's profit to be made on mars, the whole thing will go private. all this stuff does is blocks access for other countries. most of the easy money is already staked out and they're already setting up barricades - the moon & space station will be tax-funded toll booths - bet on it and make some sure money yourself. . :)

Count me as one that resents the cost. No, not because it was Bush.. I think I woke up to the fact that it's a stupid waste of money about the time Lyndon Johnson took his oath. Haven't changed my mind since.

Once upon a time, it was a novelty to see this excessive display, but no more. To me, it'd be far more prudent for the new Prez, regardless of party, to take the oath in the Oval Office, with a number of officials and family in attendance. The networks could film it and show it as a special or on the news. Who cares about the balls, where the prez & 1st lady spend a maximum of 10 minutes waving and dancing a few steps? Waste of money and time.. I'd much rather the millions would've been left in the coffers or given to charity. Know my opinion's not popular, but that's just the way it is.

Dave, if that stupid statement was meant for me, all I can say is UP YOURS! Free country last I heard, and I have my right to my opinion, same as you. I never pulled your chain, and don't appreciate your stupid childish prattling! I wasn't insulting to anyone else on the board, I was just voicing my opinion about something that happened in Washington DC, and I stand behind my words. If you don't like it, at least you can be adult in your reply.

Been giving some thought to what you said. Don't see what I said as childish prattling. Rather, I see your comments as coming from someone who "doesn't get it" and because of it, you pull out the old "free to exress my opinion" thing. Well, I was just expressing my opinion too.

You got some pretty substantial backing there in Ol Burr; you know how much everyone respects his opinions.

JB alot of folks like dear dave just don't understand what you said.

I read today that FDR is the only Prez that ever refused to have an inauguration party. He was resworn in in the Whitehouse and served cold chicken salad to the few invited folks.

Looks kinda stupid to me that the same feller that's trying to convince ignorant folks the social security is in trouble is blowing the money on Texas B-B-Q. They even used $12.5 mil of the Washington Homeland Security fund on parties.

Lets get real. We need national security more than we need Laura a dance lesson.

Well--some things are a constant, one of them being that Ol Burr can be duped into revealing his "humorous' take on things. Did I say "humorous?" I guess I'm being kind today.

Good thing you and Ol JB don't live in England where the taxpayer's money (not private contributions, you Doffuses) support a habit more costly than all of the drug addictions in the world.

It is a wonderful way for the world to see how whether we agree or disagree politically, our great nation will continue to grow and prosper.
We will continue to disagree and voters hopefully will continue to vote according to their ideals for the nation. Even though our nation is young historically, we are actually the oldest free democratic nation in existance. I think that should say a lot to others about the value of freedom.

Dictators watch out!!

If my information is wrong I am sure someone will point it out. LOL

I liked the fact that the ex-Presidents (and Sen Kerry, too) attended as guests, because that is such a great tribute to our Nation.

The fact that, although we don't all agree on everything, the nation is bigger than all of us and the job of President is bigger than any individual.

The peaceful transition of power we saw is a hallmark of what the founding fathers set up so many years ago.
