Around about Weaverville, some 200 miles from here, the Check Engine light went on.

Dummy me, I took it to the dealerhip. $460.00 later, I have a new Mass Air Sensor, and a new air filter.

$90.00 for the diagnosis, $150 plus change for the sensor (a tiny piece of plastic & metal, it looked darn clean to me!), $90.00 to install the thing (probably took all of 20 minutes, but Toyota charges a full hour, period), and another $90.00 to clean out the induction system. Then some more for the new air filter, my math is off I am sure but I'm too annoyed to look at the bill right now, I know the bottom line and grrrr!!! But once it was in there and diagnosed, I was out $90.00 and a lot of my time anyway, wasn't worth it to me to shop around at that point.

I am left wondering if they didn't do something when they changed the main bearings, but that seems so unrelated.

well, all i have to say is that keep giving your money to a country other than the usa ! therfore , your family or future family will sleep on dirt floors. there has been a war on the us for sometime not using guns but the usa people on our own soil. please next time if you buy anything in the future ! Think where that money is going ! However, I have 2 boys and lost my job after 12 years. try to explain that to my kids or yours, when you cant buy them a new pair of jeans and there friends laugh at them in school. God bless the usa ! keep the faith....

Sears sells a scan tool for all OBD2 and newer cars foreign and domestic. the new means after 1996. They are about 120.00 with a computer disc to tell what is wrong. As a retired auto-tech I have purchased one for my own use as a scan tool hookup will run 50 dollars and up. this is just to read the onboard. Until the american manufacturers get some quality built into their cars the foreign will continue to be the biggest sellers.

The check engine light has been on in the wife's car for a year and in my pickup for about that long . As long as they run OK and the fluids are good, I don't pay attention to them . Be sides I have looked under the hood and checked sure enough the engine is still there .
I hear the dealers are trying to get it so only they have the codes so the local machenic can't even have the info to fix your future car .
If that happens we're all in trouble .

Here in California, a smog test is required every two years and it automatically fails if the engine light is on. My truck is due for a smog at the end of the year. It's very frustrating, because I don't know if that service I just had was even necessary. But now I know to crank down on the fuel cap! But the mechanic said even if it was the fuel cap, the check engine light stays on even if the problem is fixed, until Toyota turns it off.

disconnect the bulb for your check engine light, its just a dealer item usually comes on at 70k so you will come in for $$. I use to work as a makeready. its a gimmick. ITs a Money THing.

Zenia: You and everybody else is going to find repair bills high on anything/everything from now on. They all need an outside computer to work on them, time them, diagnose them. The day is coming the poor slob ainít going to be able to buy an automobile third hand.
Last easy pickup I could work on was my `86. The `87 Iím driving now takes a paper clip, counting the freaking blinking dash lights and learning to read a piece of written on terlet paper to cipher half what might be wrong/ailments when itís dash lights turn on blink warnings.

Lordy! I got/s to build me one more truck before I die.

(Oh, and did I mention the fuel savings from some "reliable" "foreign" cars is quickly eaten up when ANY repairs are needed???)

Zenia, It's a pur case of OUT OF TOWNER GETS ROOKED!!!!!!! They knew you were vanerable so they took advantage. If this had happened at your home town you would have gooten a second estimate, right?

If I were you, I'd follow through with this and see if other dealers charge as much for the same repairs. If they do not, go back and demand they refund the overcharge. ......gfp

My new Ford Focus even has an idiot light saying to check the fuel cap. Guess the fuel systems are getting so air tight that tank breathing is usually the culprit.

Don't know if you have "Auto Zone" stores in your neighborhood. I think most of them will check your car when the "check your engine" light comes on for free.
