From today's Des Moines RegisterFor an environmentally friendly weed killer, mix up- 1 gallon vinegar 1 pound table salt 1 tablespoon dish soap Use the mix in a hand sprayer. Very important is to do a good wash and rinse out of the sprayer when done, because the acid and salt makes the solution very corrosive. IHank |

Do you actually use that much? 1 gallon and 1 pound? Sounds like alot to use for just a few weeds that I have. Is there a smaller amount for just weeds in the cracks of driveway? And do you mix this with water or just how the recipe says? Mindy |

I's like to know if "SALT" is a weed killer. If so, what kind of salt should I use? |

Here's a great weed killer you can make yourself for about $2.50 a gallon: Dissolve 1 pound table salt in 1 gallon white vinegar (5% acidity is ideal) Add 8 drops of liquid dish washing detergent (helps plant material absorb the liquid)and 2 cups of bleach Label and keep out of reach of children. You can use this in an ordinary spray bottle. This non-toxic formula acts as a temporary soil sterilizer, so don't spray near roots of trees, shrubs, or plants you'd like to keep. This is especially effective on a gravel driveway |

I use 100% bleach to kill all of my weeds and it works 100% of the time. There is no reason to mix it with anything else. Bleach will only KILL the plants that it is applied to, and will not harm other plants in your garden. Buy the generic bleach at WALMART and it will cost you LESS than $1.00 a GALLON! Just think of it, WEED KILLER for less than $1.00 a gallon. BTW, to apply bleach, you will need to use a pressure sprayer. I bought mine at WALMART for less than $15. | BEWARE OF THE FUMES!!!! My husband inhaled some of the fumes from the bleach bottle and it really bothered him, coughing. Put into sprayer outside or a well ventd room. Outside is best, cause my house smells like bleach and we had to open the doors. |

| Monica- I passed along what looked like an interesting formula and got no personal experience with it (yet). Vinegar is acidic (acetic acid) and shifts the pH of the surface of whatever it is sprayed on to where stuff can't live there. Strong salt applications also mess up the living conditions. Both biodegrade into the environment and do not persist. The dish soap is a surfectant that helps the stuff penetrate into whatever the solution is sprayed on. When absorbed into a plant, or insect, the stuff kills 'em! Suggest you give it a try as something to rinse your brocoli and get rid of yucky stuff living there. Taking that a bit further, I make up pickled raw veggies with a 50% vinegar and 50% water and a heavy dose of table salt solution. I'm still waiting to figger out how long stuff preserved that way will keep at room temperature. Give it a try and please post your findings so we'll all know. Grins, IHank |

I live in Australia and have a lot of annoying small Weeds growing in between my Pavers (Do you have these there ??) I dig 'em out and poison them with Kero or Petrol, but they always regrow. Can anyone suggest a good Home Made Weed Killer ??. |

1-Boiling water, between cracks in the pavement. 2-1 cup vinegar and 1/2 cup dish liquid fill a spray bottle and add water to the top. 3-I hear plain vinegar works to. |

Vinegar is a strong acid, but salt is very alkaline. Together, they cancel each other out and become an edible neutral ph. If you want stronger acid, maybe add boric acid or sugar instead of salt.......... |

I checked the pH (I have a meter at work) of normal Vinegar and it showed to be at about 2.2 pH. I then added the salt to the mixture and the pH dropped to 2.05. So even though the salt is alkaline, it must either be a catalyst or it is absorbing the moisture and making the Vinegar more concentrated (acidic). This was done with normal store bought (cheap) White Vinegar (normal 5% concentration). This is probably why salt is added to the formula. Another thing, the only thing that brought up the pH was the dish soap. It brought up the pH about .05 after it was added. |
