In MA I've got GIS (Galaxy Internet Service) serves most of RI and parts of CT, NY and NH also. $14.95 a month with rewards if you pay for the whole year at once. No timeouts, good spam filters, good service if something goes wrong. Good company to deal with. |

| I have ivwnet.com as my isp. If you can pay for the full year, it is $99.00 for unlimited connection time. I got it because I can get on at home, at my farm (different area code) and at my son's house - another state. Only aggervation is they have a 10 minute no activity cut off. I type VERY slowly - lots of mistakes! - so I have to "play games" when I am doing a post like this. I just "preview" my post and then use the browser back button so it doesn't get posted and type some more until I'm done. There are a lot of such providers. Turns out there are four MAJOR backbone internets in the USA. They do not sell directly to customers like us. They are like a manufacture (car mfr. for example) which sells thru a retailer (a car dealer) who sells the internet connection plus... X number of mailboxes, X web site space, OR whatever... The two "retailers" I have used so far have had agreements with all four backbones. BUT you must choose just one when you sign up. So, I looked at which one of the four had local dialup for the places I would be. And I just got dropped off-line!! :-( I think this is a function of the phone service as much as it is of the "10 minute time-out". I sometimes have the line go dead while I'm downloading a page, so that is why I am accusing the phone system. BUT I like it MUCH batter than AOL. My AOL mail box was constantly full of JUNK!!! and some offensive stuff too. I didn't look at the links the guys put up, but I found ivwnet thru a search for ISP's that found a site that compared a bunchof them. Good luck. My $0.02. Regards, Larry |

| Larry, have you tried setting your email software to check for email every 5 minutes? That should qualify as activity on your connection. I use an email filter, www.mailwasher.net, and have it set to check email every 5 min, so no problems with inactivity. As for losing your connection, computers are far more sensitive to noise on the phone line than are our ears. If there's noise on your phone line, you will get a computer disconnect fairly often. We have far more problems during spring thaw. Linda, Utah |

Depends on where you are. We have a local one here in Texas called Everyone's Internet, but if you are not near here ya can't get it. It is like $10 a month I think. How about Net Zero, which I THINK is free. That is www.netzero.net Then there is Academic Planet at www.academicplanet.com and I've heard that Wal-Mart has one you can get at their store. I've also heard that Juno is cheap, as I have a cousin who used them, but I don't know anything about them. You can do a Google search to find different ones to check their prices and what they offer. www.google.com Good luck to you :) |
