I see in this morning's paper that one of my County Commissioners, Lennie Thompson, proposed last night that the county secede from Maryland and become its own state. It seems that we get back something less than 40% of the taxes that we pay to the PRM; the rest goes to the cities.

I'd sure support such a thing. He didn't mention that the State doesn't represent us country folk's interests at all, they care only about the cities.

California should do that. We get about 1 dollar in federal assistance for every 1.9 dollar we contribute to the national economy through federal taxes, but unlike you, we're broke!

No this is not political, and please California fans don't California bash to make it so!

I want to secede from the Borough I live in. I get nearly 0 of my local taxes returned in services.

No road maintenance, lights, police, fire, sewer, water, gas, garbage, nothing, nadda.

I do get my road plowed when it snows if I scream loud enough.

I'm not often a welcome visitor at the council meetings, even though I'm an employee.

Are you sure you don't live on my road? Word for word I could say almost the same thing.

When I moved to Harford Cty. in 1968 the women I knew in N. Harford always commented on the lack of services.

We do have a library and rec center now but otherwise not much has changed.

Take care.

Y'know you're right, Ron. What is with rural PA and taking my money and giving me nothing back? No services at all.

They are using the money you earn to help those who are not as "fortunate" to be able to pay any taxes. You should feel privileged to be "called" upon to help out in such a small manor. If things keep going the way they are now, you will be entitled to help by "donating" even more of your "excess" as more become less fortunate than you are. :) Sorry, I couldn't resist. :)

I don't mind my taxes going to such programs. Remember, I'm in public health - I know that we pay sooner or later; better social welfare today or more jails tomorrow. I'd just like trash pick up or something in addition.

Maybe the jail inmates could pick up trash? Roadsides cleaned up in Maricopa county by jail inmates, expand the idea to PA. RN

They could haul my trash, but I don't need them to know where I live.

Killington, VT, tried to join NH a few years ago.
Nothing will ever come of it and you can take that to the bank.

Oh, I'm sure...

I know you're right, but it is funny in that it is a "shot over the bow" of our ultra-liberal State legislature. The council member who proposed this is known for making bold (some say audacious) proposals.

I think your going to be hearing more and more of that type of talk. the South had the right idea back in the 1860s.

"the South had the right idea back in the 1860s."

You mean it was their idea to lose?
