Kathy and I lost our home to fire December 8th. We are thinking about building an underground house overlooking the creek that runs through our ranch property. I would like to hear from anyone who has experience with underground homes...either positive or negative. Also, I would like to have names of experienced builders who specialize in underground home construction. Our email address is ronj@pld.com .

Hello! Also looking to build an underground house, so if you've got any ideas, please let me know. Just checked out an interesting website
formworksbuilding.com
Some prefab underground house builders, looks interesting so I sent for more info.

My husband and I have a chance to buy a berm house in need of repair. It seems the last owner didnt care for it peoperly and the roof poured water on the floors. If we reroof and ventalate it properly is it salvageble? It was built 20 yrs ago and they were the 2 owners. Are there grants to help with this kinda problem, The place was so lovely once.

Roland, I'm truly sorry to hear of the loss of your home. That's a traumatic thing, no matter how well insured you might have been.

I'm afraid I have no knowledge of underground building. I live atop the highest hill in our county, only 24 feet short of the highest point in Florida, and the water table still comes within a few inches of the surface, in wet weather. My house has to be elevated to provide drainage to the septic tank, which is above ground.
I'd suggest you go to one of the major search engines, and do a search on " construction, underground " , and see what that turns up. One thing about the internet, no matter how unusual your subject is, there are some people talking about it, somewhere.
Good luck!

One thing NOT to do - don't build it with a recessed downwind entry! Or you'll have every leaf and snowflake that ever fell - right handy :)
so be sure & throw out that myth first! (BTW, domes, like silos, sweep their own sidewalks :)
