Kountry Life Memories

The Draught Pony
I'm in N. Fl. now but hail from S. Jersey, raised in the country during WW II. We raised a Victory Garden 'cause food was scarce and rationed. You had to have stamps and when you ran out you did without. We had an old black man with a chunky plow pony named Big Dan that would turn over the garden for .50, that was a lot.He would turn the plow on it's side and go up and down the road calling out 'Big Dan's here' and people let him know and he would go in the back yard, set up the plow and they would have nice furrows to plant their seeds. We always gave him the cat fish that I caught in the creek. I grew up loving horses. I have an 85 acre cattle ranch today, but I'll always remember that chunky draft pony and old Mr. Marshall.
